Hey guys BoDyBaG here (M26ArmedCav) and it looks like I will not see the end of this war. Late yesterday afternoon I was using my main rig to play a little bit of Project Reality while I waited for more people to come to EiR. Upon reaching the map I ran foward for about 10 seconds and then my screen started to shoot lines across, colors appeared and then everything froze. The game was no longer recognizeable and after a few mins the computer restarted and I was informed that I had gotten the BSOD error and the computer shut down. Upon restarting I still got multiple lines, distorted colors, and distorted resolution. Called tech-support and we switched monitors and it fixed it, until 10 mins later when everything froze the screen went black then blue and then restarted. I started up in safe mode and I got the distorted lines and colors again. However I managed to copy down the errors I got and it looks like this error called LiveKernalEvent happens just before the Blue Screen of Death. Upon searching I found that it is a graphics card error and we have made arrangements with Gateway for them to ship us a box so we can send in the tower for repairs. They said this should take 2 weeks but it took me over a month when we sent back our broken monitor to get a new one (actually Gateway won't give you new ones just refurbished ones). So my hopes for this is not high, it looks like my gaming for the month of June has come to an end, plus the fact then I leave for Colorado on July 4th for 10 days means that there will probably be a long hiatus until I come back.

I just wanted to give you guys a head's up on why you don't see me anymore on vent. There is however a small chance that if my father yells loud enough at the people from where we bought the computer that we can return it for a refund and purchase a computer that doesn't break down constantly.... O well, BoDyBaG2224, out.

this war isn't ending any time soon  Roll Eyes

it was to end round a month ago when allies had 34 territories. so if it takes you around 2-3 months to have it sent to Gateway lol

maybe you over heated your card?

Well a month is a pretty long time, so when I do come back there probably won't be much fighting left unless there is a stalemate for a long time.

And I'm pretty sure the card just broke, I used it for literally 10 seconds on BF2 and then everything crapped out. I'm still looking into this livekernal thing to see if i can fix it my self.

If it was a GFX Card error, why'd you send in the whole tower?  Just get a new card.

Considering the computer is not even a year old I don't want to buy a new card, I'd rather pay nothing and get it fixed. And I'm not sure if it is indeed the GFx card, but I'm pretty sure it is and with the numerous BSOD's I got who knows what else may be dammaged.

Why get a complete system when you can get the single components for less? If you know where.
And damn, I couldn't survive without PC for this long.
Well, thats why we have several Cheesy .

What is happening is I will send the tower in to Gateway they will fix it and ship it back the only cost is time. However my father plans on trying to return the computer and then purchasing something similar but less shit-tastic.

Well your main problem is you bought a Gateway that is a HUGE no no, they are notorius for using refurbished parts.  The second thing is, really it would be better (if you were going to keep it) to just get a new gfx card and pop it in (they arent as REM as Dell is in terms of their components) and it would work.  A new, good quality card is pretty cheap these days.

Its just your gfx card no matter how many blue screens you got (no matter how long it ran), it wouldnt have done any damage to anything else other than the card itself.

I had a gateway laptop i bought back in the end of '03, took the thing to Iraq, never broke down over there.  Got home the screen was cracked, huge bust in body and processor overheating, sent it in and 2 weeks later got back a near new machine.  My fathers has it and it has never had a problem since then.  We have had the machine for 5 years and it still works like a beauty.  its 3ghz with 512 ram.  DVD burner and 7-1 card reader.  i did pay 2500 for the computer when i got it, but its more than paid for itself in use.  So i do have a love for gateway comps before the year 2005 when they merged with emachine and went to shit.

It has an 8500 GT in which I know isn't that great but my budget worked nicely when i bought it. I do know that the motherboard needs to be compatable with the GFX card so how would I know if it is compatable. And another thing: i saw a 9xxx series Nvidia card that was cheaper then the 8800, why is that?

Has to do with the graphics card memory, how many pipelines it runs, the processor speed, etc... there are many things that make a card cheaper or more expensive than another, even previous generation cards can be more expensive than new ones, it just depends.  (Hope I answered your question there)

In terms of MoBo compatibility, you shouldnt have a problem with another Nvidia chipset based GFX card, could possibly have a problem with a ATI chipset, so Id just stick with a Nvidia chipset, if you are going to replace just the card itself.

Crono: Same thing happened with Alienware, they were the shit, the computers were expensive yes, but man they ran great, then they went and merged with Dell and now they arent that great, but still expensive.

If you want a truely amazing computer, speaking from experience here, go with a Falcon built computer.  They do just about anything they put it through one of the harshest quality assurance tests possible to make sure that the quality is great before it gets sent out to you.

I plan on building my computer once I get a job and all, so hopefully that will end my headaches that I get with these computers. And yes you answered my question, and I figured that if I got another Nvidia card that things would be alright. Perhaps some of this birthday money could be put to good use. MWAHAHAHAHA.

As long as you know what your doing, building your own computer is the way to go, its far cheaper than having someone build it for you.  And sooooo much easier when it comes to upgrading it in the future as well.

Btw: Bodybag where in CO are you coming, I live in Denver.

The 9*** series of cards other than the top end are not that great, an 8000GTS is a good way to go, great card, relatively cheap.

I love my 9600gt.   It runs smooth as butter, not top top end smooth like a 8800gt is suppose to be but nice, if I wanted to run dx10 I could.

for its price it was well worth it, 200 bucks canadian, thats what, 300 american these days.. MUHAHAHA

I can pick up the 9600 gt for 200 dollars and I am thinking that would be good to do, it fits in my budget and the reviews seem to be good on it.

I'm landing in Denver then the group of us drive up to Evergreen and stay there. It is part of my highschool baseball team. We fly out there play the teams in the area then go off and do "touristy" stuff. I love Colorado, so much better then boring flat Florida.

Gateway is pretty tricky. My family has been getting gateways for about 10 years i want to say. Desktops for the house, then laptop for my dad when he gets deployed. he took his last laptop to afghanistan, and all these computers functioned great. the only problem has ever been is my little brothers dropping a laptop on its outgoing power cord which pushed in and broke the mobo or something along those lines. But I have a friend who has had nothing but trouble with gateway for the past 5 years.

But either way, once you start building your own computers you don't seem to have trouble. but the trouble is if something goes wrong, no one to blame but yourself  Grin

either way will miss playing with you bodybag.

I can try cleaning up my dell downstairs and patching COH to perhaps still play, just don't expect me to load fast and not lag (won't lag much but it is wireless so....)
