Technically, you need to seek permission of the map makers to repackage their maps.

They're already in the vCOH playtest and will be in the next vCOH so I see no harm in this.
The mappers agreed to hand over the rights of their maps to Relic when entering the contest, mind you.

While that is true; you've taken them out of the context in which they were to be used under (In the playtest the community will end up deciding which maps are the best to play on I believe) and I doubt the creators of the map would think they would be extracted and redistributed outside the beta (i doubt they'll care).

And you don't just 'sign over your map' it takes a lot more legal work than that.

Well if they object I'm sure we can remove their maps with no problem.

Not really, mappers don't have any rights.  They are owned mind, body, and soul by relic.

Anything you create with Relic's tools for Relic's games belongs to Relic in the end, that goes for EIR too. (With the exception of the backend coding)

Akranadas, I think it would be good to let mappers know if we collect a bunch to use in a map pack, but I don't think we need to ask permission to use unaltered copies of their map.  Especially in the case of the MP Beta, these are going to be in vCoH anywhere.  We didn't have to ask anyone if we could use St. Mere Du Mont (because it was a custom map added to vCoH).

As for other custom vCoH maps, I think it would be courteous to let mappers know we are going to distribute and promote their map in our mod (they would probably be happy), but as long as we aren't changing them at all, it is no different than a random user downloading them to use in vCoH.  Though of course we need to give them credit and not claim that these are "our" maps or anything, that would be uncourteous.  But I think Unkn0wn is right that technically there are no copyrights on these.

lol Akra is all about the "legalities" of things, unless its copyrighted and it states so, its fair game.

The only time the map creator needs to be contacted for sure is if we are going to do some map changes; ie sector changes to make them more inline with what EiR needs.
