I cannot find anything saying Hancock is based on a book though? Though you have to admit the movie has a pretty cool concept.

And your point of movies being based on books because they don't have to be creative is a valid point... but the problem is, they have the plot and stuff right there, but what do they do 90% of the time? the change the plot and make it totally stupid. Take Doom the movie for example. They had a perfect freaking plot. Scientist on Mars make a dimensional rip that opens the gates of hell. How cool is that? But no wait... nope, the movie totally changed the plot, why? Because a majority of directors are apparently complete idiots. Quoted from the director of Doom "I wanted to take the film in a different direction..." famous last words! No one wants you to take the film in a different direction  .

I agree. I don't understand why the felt like changing the plot of Doom was valid. Maybe they wanted to be PC? Who knows.

To reinforce your point - One of my favorite books of all time is James Patterson's "Along Came a Spider" now, i made the mistake of seeing the movie after I read teh book and i had to turn it off half way through, omg they changed so much stuff it pissed me off! They even left otu some of the best plot points, changed his partner to a woman who dies (book wife dies) got rid of his partner (6-9 Sampson aka Man-Mountain one of the best cop partners in any book) changed the main setting for Gary Soneji's hideaway (how do u go from mountain cabin to boat in water?) Changed Soneji from an all-american, normal every day looking guy to this sinister a-hole, got rid of the main character being led around by everybody, changed it from two kids being kid-napped to one, the parents of the 2nd kid became the parents of the 1st kid and the 2nd kid who got kidnapped turned into her best friend who's at home and is Russian...(in book he's senators kid wwhich is what the girl turns out to be..) omg still pissed!!!

I really think that if you're going to make a movie off the book and especially if that book is a #1 best seller, don't change anything!!! I don't give a crap about your creatively and how you think the story should go, you ruin the movie if you go off and try and make your own story about of it, I've never seent his work. One of my favorite movies, the princess bridge is almost word for word to the book (minus the weird stuff of course but only the story elements) actually, i dont think anything was left out, i felt like i was reading the script to the movie (mainly cuz the guy who re-wrote the book and shortened the original tale did the script as well).

Anywho. I'm writing one of my books to be in the future considered a movie and i hope some a-hole doesn't ruin it lol; (my eyes on u Murdoch)

One of the many reasons Enemy at the Gates sucks is Bob Hoskins, I mean seriously shit casting, & while on the subject why on earth put Orlando Bloom into Kingdom of Heaven. Hollywood or wherever these films r made need to seriously sort out there casting directors imo.

I agree Cross of Iron is amongst the best war films (I also love Kellies Heros (purely for Oddjob) & Where Eagles Dare (Richard Burton = cool at all times).

I want to see cross of iron!!! that and alls quiet are two WWII movies that i haven't seen that I want to. Some other good ones.

-Stalingrad, about the battle of stalingrad told from the germans point of view.
-When Trumpets Fade, short movies about a guy that goes from private to captain against his will because so many of his comrades are killed in the ardennes forest.


And another movies that has absolutely nothing to do with the book. The Relic. I don't know how many people saw the movie, but it was a really crappy unmemorable monster movie, but the book was a new york times best seller! The movie and book follow the same path 10 minutes into the movie. After that it's two opposite paths. In the book the monster looks like a human and velociraptor put together somewhat, and is the size of a human. In the movie it's this giant creature about the size of an elephant. Huge disappointment I must say.

Ya it is set in WWI, good movie though.

Another prime example, The Ruins.

The movie was mediocre at best and really not scary, though the amputation scene was absolutely brutal. The book however was excellent, definately worth the read. The ending of the movie was definately made "hollywood" by comparison to the book.

And i second Schwarzhur, both the book and film of Cross of Iron are very good.

Almost forgot Sach, if you like that style of novel have a look at a book called '' The Forgotten Soldier '' by Guy Sajer, apparently it is his personal account of his experiences with the Grossedeutschland on the Eastern Front, from the early days of Kharkov to the ending of the War for him, if it is true its a fascinating read.

enemy at teh gates i thought was ok at best but i think hollywood producers and directors are learning more and more about how to turn out better movies from books and games....i really thinkg that LOTR was the jump off point and am looking forward to the bioshock move and the ever fabled halo move!!! Bioshock Movie is going to be awesome; both the producer and potential direct played the game heaps and loved it. They want to stay true to the game as possible, without stepping away from gore and violence; going on the record say that they wouldn't mind if it ended up getting a R rating.

Siiick. I hope that Hollywood starts to notice the gaming industry a lot more than it presently does. There are several games that I can think of that would make great movies - bioshock will be exciting, but I want to see HL2 even more.

Yeah alot of games would make great storylines for movies. I personally thought that Call of Duty 4 had a perfect storyline for a movie, but thats my opinion.

What the gaming industry should do is put together some kind of studio or group of movie makers like DC and Marvel just recently made. What happens is the studio works directly with the artists and authors to create the movies so they are actually good. The reason why the Hulk was remade only 5 years after the last movie. And why the Dark Knight is going to be so awesome =D

Just imagine if your favorite games were made into actual GOOD movies! But I'm sure we are years away from that.

there was a halo movie in the works then it got scrapped and now its on production again although its still skeptical at best that it will eventually finish i would pay to see it anyway but as for HL2 i think valve has fleshed out the half life universe really well and not to mention that the games themselves are like movies but you get to play in them which i guess makes it a game   but still a HL movie?! yeah i could see that happening. Also that movie studio gaming thing sounds pretty rad.

I don't really think you can make a movie adaptation without butchering a certain element from the original piece. Its inevitable.

I've heard that Island of Dr Moreau is actually BETTER than the original book(wouldn't know myself), and stuff such as The Shinging was actually done better by a different director than Stephen King himself(he tried with his own film version).

Good movies CAN come from adaptations. Good examples are Orange Clockwork and 2001: Space Odyssey. Hell, Jurassic park.

For the most part, I haven't read the original pieces(though I've researched the major differences through people that have). These movies all had to make compromises, but its proof that making a movie adaptation is succesful.

Another reason why I think they might want to change it, is because the audience is obviously expecting some fresh twist to their original piece. Otherwise, you'd just read the book, play the game.

PS: Mortal Combat seems like one of the few good videogame movies. Wait, maybe the only good one. And it was lawl

It was strange too with the Aliens vs Predator series being badly done, because the earlier films of Predator were fantastic yet somehow they managed to fuck it up. And with Predator / Aliens the games came afterward so Films can influence Gaming as well, which is kinda weird lol

Look at the Mist. That was a PERFECT film adaptation imo. It followed the novella really close, and the only real change was the ending, which is the way it should be. You want an unexpected ending.
