Hey guys, time to pick the collective brains of the EiR crowd.  I'm looking to find a free or inexpensive multiplayer turn-based strategy game that is complex but doesn't require more than 2-3 hours max to play a single game.  I'm thinking something with the simplicity of Warlords 2, but a bit more fast-paced so that you can beat it in a sitting or two.

Requirements:
-Supports at least 2-6 players over internet
-Can finish a single game in < 3 hours
-Has enough depth and complexity that it is difficult to master
-Preferably in the rough genre of base/empire building, but I'm willing to branch out
-Preferably supports simultaneous turns or else turns are fast enough that it isn't a big deal to wait

Any ideas?

Tactics Arena online, it's pretty fun and cool and it's free. I never got too good at it though.

Ever try Sword of the Stars? It might able to be beaten in 3 or less hours if you do a really really small map and some other stuff...

Well, since number four wasn't online, Heroes of Might and Magic 5. Four was way better, though.

Well that's waht some friend and I were looking for, but I suppose we'd be open to some other types of strategy games.  But not your typical RTS (starcraft, warcraft, TA, SupCom, etc).

Try out Defcon. It's a bit simple though, and the typical game probably won't last more than an hour.

If you love WW2, Hearts of Iron 2 is a must get as it pretty much covers every aspect of WW2. Amazing game although the campaign starting in 1936 will take a lot more than 3 hours :p.

It's not really 'free' either Wink.

Epic: Warhammer 40, 000 is bettar!

Wesnoth is okay, but flawed in a lot of ways imo, shame because I was looking for something a lot like it.
Have you tried Age of Wonders? Either the First or the Third (AoW: Shadow Magic), second one should be skipped, horrible mish mash of focus in it.

If you don't mind old graphics then dig out M.A.X. really classic TBS on par with Master of Orion II (but can take just as long unfortunately).
MAX lets you pick a starting force, land on a planet where you like, and build up a base as you see fit, then you are allowed to upgrade every single units stats exactly how you see fit.
So say you have a Rocket Tank, that can move 8 space and Shoots twice, with area damage. You can spend gold (third resource after fuel, and materials) to either upgrade it's move rate, add an extra shot or do more damage, or just hold more ammo (everything has ammo, and needs to re-arm for materials). Anything from Move rate, armour, hitpoints, attack damage, attack range, sight radius, radar range (etc etc), can be done, for every unit.

You can specialize just in your tanks and really beef em up or just add to your whole army here and there with cheaper upgrades.

"Quick TBS game" is really something of an oxymoron. If you want quick, play an RTS. If you want TBS, play HOI2.
