Does the sound card make a big difference? Because mine is pretty old.
Also, what is the minimum required speed for decent quality?

VOIP takes up very little bandwidth, old or new, sound cards do the same thing...they out put sound. So a new or old one doesnt matter.
The actual sound quality may sound better on a new one, but thats only because its coming out of your sound card. New tech and what not.
Old or new you should be good with Vent though.

I can't figure out why everyone always hears a "cracking" sound, whether over vent or using bf2's in-game voip

Could be the card, or it could be your line in and out of your house as well.
