My *possible* new computer
«

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I was looking at building a new computer and I was wondering if you guys had any advice.
CoH is actually pretty intensive but here is what I'm thinking:
CPUIntel Core 2 Duo Conroe E6700 2.67GHz FSB 1066, 4MB CPU
Memory2048 MB DDR II 800 Memory (Corsair XMS2 Twin2X) (SLI ready RAM)
Mother BoardASUS P5B Mother Board
Hard Drive 1Western Digital 320GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA II
Optical Drive 1LG 16X DVD RW +- Dual Layer Serial ATA
VideonVidia eVGA 8800 GTX KOACS3 768MB GDDR3, Dual DVI, HDCP
AudioOnboard Audio
Network CardOnboard Network Card
CaseAntec Performance P182 Aluminum ATX Mid Tower (black)
Power Supply550 Watt Antec Power Supply Neo HE ATX Low-speed Fan
The idea is not to be ridiculous and pay like an extra 800 for EE CPUs or anything.
Comments/Opinions?
*Edit: Neon light removed - don't know why they are there.

Wow, nice rig.
Since this is obviously going to be a high end pc, I'd recommend a larger PSU those 8800GTXs suck up the juice! Plus it will save you later on when you choose to upgrade down the road.
Why no Retail soundcard? Although advancements in onboard sound quality and function have greatly improved, you will still take a small hit to your CPU power for sound and if you have anything larger then say a 2.1 setup the sound will be noticibly better. Get a creative gamer of X-fi whatever they are called now adays.
Also if you are into overclocking even a little bit the E6600 will give you more bang for your buck, either way I'd reccomend getting a aftermarket heat sink fan (HSF) as the stock one really really sucks, just look @
www.anandtech.com
and check out one of their recent HSF reviews.
If you burn a lot, or like the ability to do cd to cd copies a secondary optical drive is a good option, it also helps to have 2 cd drives for games that require cd's (without the need for no-cd hacks or making ISO images to mount with programs)
Anyways just some recommendations, this rig will easily run CoH on max settings with AA/AF on(depending on resolution)
Again awesome rig.

Pretty much the same system as me, I have the E6600, 4GB DDR2-800, and the 8800 GTS 640MB.
I agree with not getting a retail sound card actually. The price doesn't make up for the gain, especially since you'll probably have to pick a creative card and deal with their ultra-shitty drivers and support. I specifically didn't get an X-Fi for that reason.
As far as power supply, just make sure it has dual 12V rails and has a high rated efficiency.

Although I haven't had any problems with creative drivers, I know people who have, then again I can say that for almost any driver.
I do have a 5.1 setup at my home though and the difference in quality is easy to hear, I have the creative gamer though (which is a series behind the x-fi stuff) so I'm not sure what the latest chips sound like.
That Antex P/S should have pretty good rating, but P/S are relatively cheap, just an easy upgrade if you can get a higher rated one (shrug), could save you from having to buy a larger one later.

This Power supply has triple 12V rails and is rated at almost 85%. However, I was curious if 550W would be enough.

Yup, should handle your current setup just fine, I was only reccomending higher for upgrades down the road.

funny, the day after you post this, and 2 days after I order a new gfx card for my comp, my current gfx card 1/2 craps out on me, my DVI port no longer works, so Im stuck with only one monitor for 2 days
Wish I could afford that set up your looking at there.

My question is why the 8800 GTS? If you're going to shell out all that money for the CPU you should go for the best GPU too.
