Actualy, all the "western" tanks except the challenger you the same German Smooth Bore cannon. And the Westernized asians us that gun as well (Korea and Japan).
While the challanger and the Leoperd are considered good tanks. The Abrams and the Isreali Merkava (sp?) are probubly the top ranked tanks in the world, only because they have seen combat.
Though the Abrams has an new upgrade, the SEP, forgot what it stands for. And the Merkeva has a built in morter to bother infantry with.
On a side note the Koreans have the most expensive tank and the world, the XK2 Black panther, and the Japanese have their new Type 10 and Type 90. All three use conventional armor.
The Type 90 is considered a little better than the Leapord 2 by some, I think it has better electronics. And the Type Ten is considered (by some) to have the most advanced electronics and C4 system (Like social networking for tanks). However, this is all opinion And sicne all the above tanks use the same gun, the only things that very are armor, electronics and crew. Crew being the biggest variable.
As far as walking tanks go, they don't make sence. While you become more mobile, you become a bigger target, You sit higher, Legs have more stress point than whiles and treds as well. Even though we have the tech to make walking machines now, we don't have the materials to do it. I think we'll see powered armour suits for soildiers before we see wide spread use of walking tanks.
EDit: I forgot, that most of the really new tanks have active suspentions too, they can sit higher or lower or corcker and lean and stuff. The abrams and the Challenger and the leapord don't have those options yet... id on't think.
And mechwarrior sized mechs don't make sense at all. In mechwarrier, the mechs are made out of ridiculum and can only be killed by other mechs. In the real world, we have plenty of man portable Anti-armor. Heck one panzershrek to the leg...
