when trying to download this map pack for the game, avast! gives a virus alert, saying it contains a trojan.

No its not necessary to sneak a pak and several storm trooper squads behind to kill their calliope if the game is already over.

Why would anyone want to try to hurt EiR?

Name and shame them.

So, trying to be helpful and reporting a problem makes me a troll?  Nice groupthink you guys have got going on here.

I posted because that's what happened when I downloaded the map pack, in earnest hopes that whomever posted the map pack could explain what was going on, and maybe the problem could be solved so that other people who were told about EiR being fun aren't scared away.

I think the thing was that someone posted the exact same thread just before you.

well, there's no trojan, maybe it's possible that when  you downloaded that file that a previous trojan activated, which has happened on my computer, they can hide from virus scans sometimse.

WOW!    Undecided

You guys should lay off the cocaine...  I can't believe the paranoia.

I am not the same person as DFKR.

He is a buddy of mine that I was trying to get to try a mod with me.  I was guiding him through the setup process and he told me his anti-virus went off when he tried downloading the map-pack link I forwarded him.

-----------

You are ALL SO KNOWLEDGABLE about everything I can't believe that you missed some pretty basic stuff...

1) People have friends and they play games together...(perhaps they might even make accounts around the same time, if say it is required to play a mod...).

2) Transporter technology is NOT real (no Star Trek in not a documentary) so one person can't make separate accounts from across the continent within minutes (as IP addresses would prove).

3) Most Mods require feedback from the community to improve.  Having the attitude that nothing is wrong with what I have created only leads to Frankenmods.

4) Anti-Virus software can report false positives. (just as one scanner can miss a virus).  Maybe the poeople that didn't scan the file but posted anyway should get banned too?

--------

I am very disappointed.  The videos I was watching on ModDB mentioned how cool the community is and how helpful the community is to new players.  Wow.  We haven't even got past the setup stage and we are already getting flamed in the forums.

I trust one of my friends (of over a decade) more than I trust misc dudes on a forum thread.  DFKR was about 2 minutes behind me as we were installing last night and right after I got the map pack installed he told me his alarm went off...  I spent the rest of my night scanning my PC.  Not the fun I was hoping this mod was going to bring.

Let me guess.  If I was to actually try the game now, and form an opinion, I better not actually post unless it's positive.  Because it is clear that there can't be anything wrong with any aspect of this mod... (Ssssh the Emperor has no clothes, but don't say that...)

Looking at my Steam page at the moment I have over 80 hours logged in the last 2 weeks playing COH alone.  I think it is unlikely that DFKR will be playing EIR now, either.  And I have a friend from our clan (that I won't mention for fear of a witch hunt starting) that installed yesterday and made the suggestion that we get this mod.  How much is he gonna play now without his budds?  We were ready to put some serious time into this community.

You seem genuinely shocked that there are new people wanting to play the mod.  That is scary.  When was the last time someone actually tool interest in EIR and made an account???  Perhaps this is a clue to why...

Cleaned up this thread.  Don't be so fucking paranoid guys.

Scanned with Avast, AVG, and Symantic.  Nothing came up.

It would be a bit unusual for everyone else to report no problems at all.  In this case, I do believe that it was a false positive.  Hopefully, you are able to get a game in today.

Yikes!  I'm sorry people jumped all over you (even though I can't see what flaming actually took place).  Welcome to the EiR community and I hope you are able to get the game working!

Thank you for reporting the virus warning.  With things like that you should always err on the side of caution.  I think in this case since no one else seems to have any problems with the file it is probably a false positive or evidence of preexisting virus/malware.  But there was no way for you to know that before posting.

Again, welcome to both ColonelMustardGas and DFKR.  I hope some trollish behavior on some peoples' part doesn't deter you from enjoying this fantastic mod.

Cheers.

This community is full of whiners, haters, flamers, trolls and internet losers. which is probably the exact reason you dont fit in.

I personally come under the whiner group same as Unknown and the other 9/10's of this community.

get used to it.

That is the thing with trojans... would you notice???

While I was panicing last night, and my friend was sitting there waiting, he was nice enough to take the time to post that there might be a problem.

Most devs would want to know if a virus was being distributed with their project.  Most devs would want to know if there is a bug that makes it look like there is a bug that makes it look like there is a virus being distributed with their project.

There are no longer any links in the map database to the "Mappacks 1&2" like the setup video on ModDB mentioned.  I figured it would be smart to at least have the finalized maps installed before trying to play but I didn't want to install them all individually.  I just did a search for 'EIR map pack' and this link came up...  Since the file wasn't endorsed by this community's forums with a link, I figured ANYONE could have posted it.  If someone is posting files for this mod that contain trojans, they are the ones hurting this community, not the people that report it...

DFKR was just trying to help.

...guess it's time to go back under my bridge and play vanilla COH. (have fun playing with yourselves)

Unfortunatly the community can't speak for every single person out there.

nature of the community is there is a large group of younger people who though are very nice do lack some maturity.   Those who posted up that they conducted scans where not being paraniod but also providing feedback to the devs just in case there was a major error.

Its ashame you got the sour end of the stick but it can happen, look if you jump on vent and seek people like stumpster, salan, kolath, Dasnoob, chaos, commander newbie and a few others out they will be very very supportive.

You do get the good with the bad in these communities unfortunatly.

regards NEV
