My stats are very similar to yours and its god awful. I have everything on LOW just to play on-line. I'm save to buy a totally new machine this summer. Probably buy all the parts and have a shop assemble it for me.

FYI there is plenty of people around here that give sound advice on what to get.

Unfortunately, that is DDR400 ram he's got there, as he's using an AMD Athlon single core.
I wouldn't be surpised the vidcard is AGP, too.
The rig is just too outdated...

Are you pulling my leg? This machine set me back €800 about 4 and a half years ago and it sucked then too, although it didn't suck as hard as it does now.

What constitutes a "beast" in today's standards?

Even if parts in Europe are converted at a 1:1 euro:dollar basis, 800 US dollars worth of hardware is nothing to sneeze at. ATi 4870 or NVidia GTX 260 will do you well enough (4870 is cheaper at the moment by a bit, though your prices may vary - both cards are basically the exact same power), and a core 2 duo or quad is plenty of power for the processing. DDR2 memory is still the most cost-efficient, although DDR3 memory is getting cheaper all the time.

If you want an AMD based performance platform, Phenom II is the way to go. As for motherboards, intel based, I'd go for a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 series board. I cannot recommend crossfire or SLI in terms of cost-effectiveness.

My PC in terms of prices now is about 1000 dollars worth of parts, but a lot of those are parts you'd not really need (sound card, new case, new hard drive, et c. et c.) and chances are for a budget of 800 euros you could get something that outmuscles what I have, even with the charge for assembly. My machine rips through CoH at 60 FPS on full details and 1280x1024 resolution. I'm fairly certain I have V-Sync on.

Ah thank you so much dude, I'm making a note of that post, thanks again.

I terms of future proofing should I go with DDR3?

DDR3 still isn't that necessary, nor it will be in the nearest future... But if you'll see that the prices don't wary by more than 20-30 euros for both the mobo and ram, go for the DDR3.

Honestly, chuck another gig of RAM and a Geforce 9600 GT in there and you'll be able to run Company of Heroes on High settings probably. (If you're running XP at least)

But sooner or later you'll have to get a new one, probably not worth investing money into that anymore.

My specs are nearly the same:

Processor:AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.20 GHz
Memory:1024MB RAM 400 mHz DDR (2 x 256 [original], 1 x 512)
Hard Drive: 180 GB 7200 rpm
Video Card:NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS PCIe 16x (512 mb)
Sound Card:Realtek AC97 Audio
Motherboard: MSI-7093 Micro ATX
Power Supply: 300 w
Operating System: Windows XP Pro, SP 3

It runs well, however, I do get frequent PC lock ups where I have to hard reboot, the cause of which I suspect to be heat or power issues, although it could be memory issues too; I do have an exterior fan blowing on the tower to help increase air circulation.

I can run next gen games with medium to high settings (post processing, medium to high textures, shadows, medium model detail) with out any shuttering.   When playing multiplayer, I usually forego post processing, set textures low to medium, shadows to low, etc).

In general my PC runs well and is well maintained (scanned, cleaned, updated once a week).  I am considering upgrading my RAM to 2 gb, possibley purchasing a new pair of 1 gb dimms, but is it worth it?  I suspect I will still have the frequent lock ups.  If I get the new 2 gb, would it be beneficial to keep the dimm of 512 mg for a total of 2.5 gb?  Sorry, but purchasing a new budget PC is out of the question for me, I'm on a VERY tight budget. . .

RAM is so cheap there is no reason not to throw in 2gb, bring it up to 3gb total.

Should keep your going for a bit.

Downside, a new PC costs about $300, so upgrading an old one quickly stops being economical.

Don't mislead people AmPm.
DDR400 Ram these people have cost a FORTUNE(up to 5 times DDR2 costs)
Upgrading those computers is, frankly, not worth it.
You'll pay a flipping fortune for the RAM alone, and it will still be quite obsolete by todays standards.
@ Unknown.
Stop advertising the 9600 GT. A change from a 6600 GT to a 9600 GT would mean that the RAM and CPU would bottleneck the rig, the mobo might not even accept it (6600 GTs were mostly AGP based, 9600 GT in AGP is really damn rare(and overpriced as it's outdated)).
If you have a single core Athlon processor(up to 3800+), your computer has DDR400(may be 333) RAM which is overpriced and outdated, so upgrading it is not worth it. Neither is the processor as it's using a soc 939 slot(so do most of the FX series) and those are, yet again, overpriced and rare by now. Buying a new rig is much more beneficial these days, as new computer prices are at an all time low. For 800 euros you can get a beast, monitor included, and for around 500 euros you can get a beast'ish rig without a monitor(use old one).

I see your point, AmPM, but all my PC needs right now is an extra nudge, I am not planning on purchasing anymore next gen games until I build myself a proper gaming rig, which I don't see myself doing anytime in the fore seeable future  Embarrassed.

What kind of hardware specs do budget PC have these days?  Is it better to build a rig from scratch or updrade a new budget PC?  In my experience it seems budget PC are lacking in hardware needed for game play.

For your use, probably buy a budget, add vid card.

As for what they come with, Dual Core of some kind in the 2.2ghz range, 3gb DDR2 RAM, 320+ GB HD, PCI-E slot for card.

Pretty good deal for $300ish, add in a new card, looking at $400 for something that will run any game out there right now.

Another point about the latest GPUs: most need to be powered directly from the PC power supply, and they require a power supply of at least 500 Watts.
