I've made several 1v1 maps for vCoh in the past, and can handle the detail aspects very well, but unfortunately no one really plays custom maps in vCoh regardless of how good they are, so I want to make a map for EIR since if I do a good job there's actually a chance it will get played.

To start of course I have to know what size to make it.  Can someone tell me exact numbers that could work for an EIR 3v3, for playable size and OOB area?  I can adapt the map layout to the size, but I just need to have a certain size to start with.

For sectors, I was thinking 3 wide and 6 long (total of 18 sectors), for a rectangular map like Tanteville.

So, numbers please.   Smiley

make it 5 long, completely symmetrical sector layout encourages camping.

2vs2 & 3vs3 maps are the most popular, we need more of both Smiley.

Rectangular maps are by far recommended for any EIR map. For a 2vs2 something about the size of Rails and Metal is quite decent. (512 x 256 playable area) Making it a little longer and a little less wise works out great too, as long as you don't use a square map anything is good really.

Abbeville (my 3vs3 map) is 608x384 in playable size. Bastion is 588 * 384. Etc, you get the point.

OOB areas should always be approx 200 - 256 more than the playable area. (on both lenght & width)

Your sector ideas are good.

I originally had intended to make it 5 long and 3 wide with just 4 sectors across the middle, but the map guide said to make it 50/50 so one side doesn't have the advantage -- though with 5*3 + 1 it wouldn't give one side an advantage would it?  I can do either and I prefer an odd number of sectors to discourage camping but someone who's made good EIR maps will have to tell me that.  In any case, sector amount can be changed easily later on.

Thank you unknown, that's what I was looking for.

Edit: gah, worldbuilder crashes in 2.502.  Will go look for info on that.

you could shake it up a bit and make the middle sectors weird shapes to give a little asymmetry. I just weep when i see maps which are completely square symmetrical blocks, especially if it lines up with a town because it usually means campy mg/mortar with the emphasis on attrition and not map control.

Also, care to share you previous work?
Sounds like you're an experienced mapper, would love to see some of your accomplishments.

If you've made any 2vs2 or larger maps before you could probably port them to EIR.

I made Alencon in 2.301.

After that I made another 1v1 map "Cleville" but was still working on finishing it up when 2.501 came along and screwed up the worldbuilder, and I quit.  I was a little disappointed that no one played Alencon so I wasn't as motivated to do all the work of publishing Cleville, but I enjoyed making the terrain anyway.  Some day if I can get the 2.301 map to work in 2.502 I'll finish it I suppose.

Looks great!

If you can make us similar quality maps I have no doubt that we'll be seeing some of your work in our installer soon Smiley.

OK, I got over the creating a map hurdle by making the DataPreview folder, so I was able to create a map and put some stuff on it, but when I try to save or save as in any directory, it tells me:

So I'm able to create a map but unable to save it after it's created.  And creating it does not place any files anywhere.  Anyone know what's wrong, or have a link to a thread where this is explained?  I've been looking all over for an hour but am a bit worn out with it.

Well, not sure what I did but I got it working.

I'm using the Holland buildings and modeling the terrain more after Bedum and Wolfheze rather than Normandy maps like I did with Alencon.  Mostly it will be fields and hedges, but there's one village and there will be scattered farms.  Here's part of the village so far:

I've laid out most of the middle half of the map, and polished a lot of the area around the town.  Before I go too far I'd like it if an experienced mapper could look at it and give advice if necessary, I want it to play well in EIR and I'm not really experienced with EIR.
Here's the SGB and files as they are now (it's a 2.3 MB download):

Here's a screenshot of what I've got so far:

looks nice so far, looks like it should be a non campy map due to the width and places. I tried making a map but how did you get the grass? Right now its just that shitty sand colour all over the map for me Sad

Maps looking awesome. Can you try making a objective pop cap version as well? It'll give more interesting game play.

Progress:

Much of the ground isn't detailed yet, but the layout is mostly done.

I foresee a terribly horrible future of being played 100 times every day for this map.
