What does this do exactly? Because I use it a lot, and I have to say I'm not very impressed. It seems like most of the time I still get shot by whatever is shooting at me, how much does this reduce incoming accuracy?

You can't sit in it.  It will obscure your accuracy but half the time not the enemy's.  What you need to do is pop smoke and THEN back up, so enemy shots passing through it take the reduced accuracy penalty (but also affects your sherman too).

that's exactly what i do, i think it either needs to be bigger, or maybe the fact that i use it so much, it just seems to not be effective (ie i focus more on the times it doesn't work rather than when it does work.) anyone else use these a lot, do they seem effective or no?

I find it only useful in a GTFO situation where a sherman gets trapped or a Calli needs to run for its life. But it really sucks at close range since a missed tank shot still hits a tank it passes through. Thats why NEVER use smoke vs PUMAs. They will dodge everything.

Dafuq man, don't ask for proof if you'll refuse it if it's not in your favor, logic fallacy for the bloody win.
