Bullets in CoH, as opposed to common belief, are in fact treated by balistics.

In other words - if you shoot a rifle, and it rolls a miss, and the bullet "graphic" hits something else - that something else will take damage. Just like a tank(bazooka, shrek, RR) firing, rolling a miss and still hitting deals damage - stray bullets are also dangerous.

How do I know/can prove it?

Put a cloaked sniper in front of a standard infantry squad. Set the sniper to hold fire, just in case. Ask a friend to shoot at the infantry squad at medium range with MP40s(STG44s and Thompsons will also do). Now, watch as the "missed" bullets hit the cloaked sniper and take away his health.

This means, that cover is even more important than the simple 0.5-0.75 recieved dmg/acc boost. Taking cover is integral in saving your guys from stray bullets, as well as aimed ones.

Just decided to share it.

I've noticed this before, when there's a battle going on in the front and the mortar in the back tell you it's getting attacked.  Didn't think it did damage though.

Well I always thought that bullets always "hit the ground" and didn't hit anything else that it wasn't aimed at. Basically, it either hit the target or the ground, never noticed "stray" bullets, thats cool though but i don't think it's too huge as it can be totally random. Tank shells on the other hand make sense and btw, i'd love ot see more tank shots miss high and low rather than left and right when you fire at a stationary target, it's kinda stupid getting the forward accuracy is the easy thing but getting the elevation right for a ballistic shell is difficult, especially at range.

Dafuq man, don't ask for proof if you'll refuse it if it's not in your favor, logic fallacy for the bloody win.

There's an article in CoHStats which proves that bullets in fact do(did) NOT have balistics in them.

I would believe bullet balistics haven't been in until TOV, as I see no other explanation.

The article which shows bullets not having balistics :

I am confident that this has been in longer. Since OF at least. I mean, every decent player already knows not to run his sniper into a firefight, because he will die to the bullet hail.

I am not a fan of those labtests, because they claim to show things in general when they don't. They only show one situation and CoH is more complex than that.

Interesting...I knew that you could kill stuff with a calculated miss. In fact, I've used this deliberately to kill many things before. If shooting at a squad constructing a building, then the missed shots will usually hit the building. However I always thought that the hit box of infantry was much smaller than the graphical representation (almost zero and that it didn't effect infantry short of attacks with splash damage. The fact that this works on infantry is new to me...I dont think it will change how I play...but I'll think about it. Thanks for the find. Will likely test it myself before I take it to heart, but thanks for bringing it to my attention.

PS: For those who go to bed at a reasonable time, I'm back (for a little while)

so... does this mean that a missed bullet can actually hit someone at the other side of the map?

It would require the intended target being on the edge of a 2 kilometer high cliff, but in theory - yes.

So you attempt to catch me in a self-contradiction, but fail to notice I myself slander CoH-stats, while glorifying RGDs?

Let me restate it for you :
CoH-stats = inaccurate and a piece of shit.
RGDs = always accurate, except in T17 penetration vs WM HT armor.

I noticed this a long time ago when I had a cloaked Goliath hiding in a bush and there was a riflemen squad between my Goliath and a MG42. The MG started doing damage to the Goliath so I concluded that scatter on Infantry works just like scatter on Tanks.
