Since some mappers might have the skills but lack inspiration... and some players might have the inspiration but lack the skills... This thread could be an interesting way of aiding both types of community members.

Post your crazy ideas on maps for Europe in Ruins here, it can be historically correct or just completely made up.
Just remember that these maps must make sense (so no crazy outer space) and must fit into the mod's context. (Western European based maps only!)

Also, the more information you can give relating your idea, the more likely it is any mapper might use your ideas for a potentially great map.

Shoot!

Here are the kinds of things I'd personally like to see in maps, if only for variety, though I realized not all will work well in EiR.  Some of these ideas I've taken from maps in first-person shooters I enjoy:

Footbridges: have a map where the main portion of the map is accessible by footbridge only, so that vehicles cannot effectively participate.

Heavily wooded/bocage: again, a map where vehicles will struggle to participate in.

Natural defences: lots of cliffs or hills that the defender can take advantage of.

Map with few sectors: for example, a 1v1 map with only 6 sectors total, so that taking any one sector from the opponent results in their loss.  Bonus points for making defenders spread their forces out a lot to hold their three sectors.

Trench warfare: have a map with open field (red X cover) in the middle, but with trenches (green cover) on either side.

Defend a structure: a structure on the map must be defended by one side, and destroyed by another.  Artillery might give the attacker an unfair advantage here...

We also need some setpiece battles- IE battles over areas that took place that give major resources to either side, like Cherbourg, Carentan, St Mere Eglise, or Caen.  Since Cherbourg and Carentan are already done, I'd like to try making a Caen map, since I am personally interested in the battle.  Also, we might want to have Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword, and Juno beaches.

Try to focus more on general type maps to be used all over the strategic battlefield. The vanilla COH maps are quite specific already. Once we get rolling a bit further we should concentrate on every major city and area.

I'm probably going to commence construction of a new map soon, might use some of the ideas that get posted here.

So keep it coming!
Oh and it doesn't have to be an entire map idea, you could just simply suggest neat things that could be used for the maps, themes, locations, whatever.

This would be more for the low countries, but one or two maps with large fields seperated by steep dikes with roads ontop would be nice.

I'll edit the post as I think about more ideas.

1: A large, sprawling wreck of a city with lots of rubble/collapsed buildings.

2: An enormous factory/installation, plenty of infantry CQB.

3: A POW camp or an ammo dump (style it like the V1 raid of campaign).

4: A nice, open countryside, with fields full of dead cows, tractors, and smoking tanks.

*edit*

5: Nice, easily-defendable hilly countryside.

6: A ruined/intact suburban area.

7: The Ardennes (Close Combat 4, Grand Campaign)

8: The Rhine (industrial areas and the river)

9: The Seigefried Line (once again, Close Combat 4, Grand Campaign)

10: Anzio (do I need an explanation?)

11: A V1 site (a homage/ripoff).

12: Anything from Operation Market Garden (Arnhem, Oosterbeek, Nijmejen, Son). (See Close Combat 2: A Bridge too Far.)

13: The Winter Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Line)

*edit*

14: an airfield, either at the edge of the map or in the center.

15: a U-boat pen

16: A military base

17: Has anyone played Close Combat, especially 4 or 5? The Grand Campaign maps are simply perfect for many of the things listed here, and most, if not all, the maps are historically accurate. Finally, one can buy all 5 games for around 30$ total if you search online.

My idea:
A large, rural town.  All the small towns are two or three buildings, nothing more, but the soldiers in Normandy on both sides had to clear large towns that had one or even no buildings with more than one story.  These places got leveled pretty fast, but they would make maneuvering your troops a heck of a lot more important and critical.

We could use a few maps that are just huge open fields with a road through them or some really barren ones.  Maybe the odd hill or something.  Should be easy to create.

Yes those would be nice, but since plain fields look horrible, it's really harsh to create a good looking rural map.

If it's your first, don't worry, just start out with a tiny map and mess around, you'll quickly learn the basics and get better.

But don't expect your first maps to really look great, unless you're a natural talent Tongue.

About to start on a third map, this time it's going to be a 2vs2.

Any suggestions are very welcome, as long as they're based upon a realistic scenario and France/Holland/Belgium/Germany or a simular West European country.
(And obviously it has to be do-able in the worldbuilder Wink)

Do a wilderness one - one with a single road, and then lots of trees and hills to block LOS and provide cover, but no obsticles forcing you to walk around areas - in otherwords, you can basically straight line to any areas on the map from any other area.  That would be cool. Smiley

Try making a train station map. Loads of cover because of wagons and building.

A large, 4 vs 4 desert map with nothing but small, rolling hills.

Yeah it would be nice if they had tall grass.

I'd like a more open 4vs4 map - we lack those.
