erm,guys,you know that there are no such things as 'freedom of speech' ,nor 'democracy' nor even 'freedom' which americans are so proud of.You are constantly being limited,and more and more freedoms are taken from you,and you even dont see it.
I'd say Americans have much when it comes to Freedom of Speech (Westboro Baptist Church anyone? Fox news?), but when it comes to democracy... The "democracy" in the USA is just one big joke on the populations expense. |

There ain't much freedom to be had in poverty why do you think i am poor? sure i still havent been able to get a job but i still live with my parents in a quite nice house. only the peope who took retarded loans are poor now and in my opinion deserve it a little due to they took all thelones and yet make the rest pay for them. ps: i am 17 |

Tolerance stops where it requires us to be tolerant of people who preach intolerance.

Mill's Harm Principle and Libertarianism is a good place to start, you may also want to check out Utilitarianism briefly. There's also some good case law on the subject relating to the European Convention of Human Rights if that's relevant to your essay, in fact the ECHR is a good reference even if it is out of your jurisdiction. You may also want to look at the Social Contract theory with the works of Hobbe and Locke as a counterpoint. I'm not gonna go into much detail because it's your essay but basically they [Hobbe in particular] are arguing that the individual gives up his rights and power to the state in return for protection.

Demon, if you are not finished with your essay already and still can change it or include new stuff, you should write why freedom of speech is adverse. Take the viewpoint of the secret police, the information controllers, the government. Talk about subjects such as stock prices, public uprising and the positive aspects of controlling information. Also what David said is pretty useful. This is a pretty rock star assignment, shouldn't be hard.
Locke > Hobbes as far as being related to the assignment
It's much more convenient to write about how total free speech is a good thing and a democratic value compared to speaking for moderation of public debate. Adding the opposing view is always A material.
Take China for example. They have a very different opinion on the value of free speech. What makes them think their take on things is needed or superior?

Yer i have yet to begin my actual body, im compiling the research, so far ive got around 5000 words of useful evidence. i will look into hobbe (although that name soudns so familiar, i think i learnt about the guy in psychology human behaviour) But yes, those are very useful ideas Smokaz, Thankyou, i will look into it today after i wake up (1am)
