Yeah, I'm kinda confused onto why there are houses on the beach inself, I haven't actually looked at any real photographs of the beaches of Normandy, but were the houses really that close at certain points?

No.
You will find houses near the beach but never on. and they most certainly are built on strong foundations usually behind the sea wall.
Alot of the landing sites have accumulated sand dunes in the time since then. Juno Beach probably had buildings the closest to the water
Even thats a rare example. Sand makes for terrible foundation.
Dieppe is a good example of a City right near the beach though. I've been trying to do a Dieppe map for a while now but doing the cliffs really fucks up camera angles in some cases.
