To be honest the Catholic church probably performs thousands of good actions every day. They just go unnoticed except to those involved. I've never believed in the concept of Religion and government. Not only is it difficult to have a 'State' religion in the modern world because religious ideologies clash, but I'm not sure I trust a man who claims to rest his fate upon gods will.

It's true that some theocracies bring a positive benefit to a Nation or territory(Taliban of Afghanistan), there is no doubt of that. However in alot of cases religious government also bring outdated and hard to interpret(or easy depending on perspective) texts and teachings. This often allows the a wide range of powers and ability, which inevitably leads to corruption and misuse.

the biggest problems of from outside point of view is that the mostly uneducated population elects its government based on PR instead of political reasons
and that they seem to like supporting war everywhere and wasting money

All of that will destroy this country, I'd leave but to where?

how about africa?  Smiley

He can move to Canada, it's closer and less of a total system shock. We have some similar issues but we're still many decades off imploding.

The American political lobby is what's wrong with America to be honest.
http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/index.php

For me, as a European, it's just baffling how they let the people's representative's accept funding from private institutions. Politicians are supposed to represent the people that vote for them, not the industries that pay for their campaign.  In Belgium, and many other European countries for that matter, the state largely sponsors party campaigns and there would be public outcry when a politician accepts money from an industry.

This is the case in any democracy really, and it's why democracies are generally not that great of a system. Unfortunately there's no better alternative. Democracy is built on the assumption that the public is rational and has a good grasp of politics (Ideally they'd even be participating in society one way or another) and that on voting day the public makes a choice based only on well founded arguments. But we all know that's not what happens in democracy, most people couldn't care less.

As an american I used to think European politics was wayyy better than American.
Europeans are more educated in political matters and it seemed that would mean better elected officials. But who are we kidding. Found out its actually next to barbaric in some of the meetings they have and politicians are actually sleazier.

Ask any Afghan refugee how they feel about the Taliban. In fact, I dare you to tell them the Taliban did something "good" for Afghanistan. If you don't get beaten up senseless for daring imply the murderers of their family members are "good" for the country, they'll give you a nice and long lecture about how the Taliban forces people into drug trade, and shoots anybody who disagrees.

The Taliban is a ridiculously bad thing for Afghanistan.

Religion has, in the past 200 years, only served to STOP countries from developing, causing undue bloodshed and division of the society. I find it disgusting that anyone implies it's the "lack of religion" that's killing America. The main reason why I find America a disgusting and socially backwards place is actually the importance the country's populace places on religion.

I'd say countries like the UK are fairly well off, being countries where religion is shunned. Much better off as far as stability is concerned compared to countries where religion is extremely well-entrenched (Middle East, North Africa).

Religious people in society.

Yep... if only more Americans were like her we would be much better off /sarcasm.

The real tragedy here is that her vote counts and there's entire political parties that pander to people just as ignorant as her to get them to the polls.

This is the primary reason why democracy doesn't work in America.

America doesn't have a population educated enough, or even INTERESTED enough, to actually listen to the arguments and make intelligent/informed decisions. They go to vote for the person who shares their religious beliefs or something else equally as irrelevant. "I could see myself having a BEER with that guy!". Not to mention the incumbency system here and the two party election system. Because of these things meaningful change will never ever happen.

To be honest, this is the case in any democracy, not just in the united states. And it's an inherent flaw in democracy. Though I will agree the situation in the United States is even worse than the situation in your average European democracy. (Education plays a large role indeed, but so does religion.)

I don't think the US would even have a large republican party if it wasn't for religion and poor education.

Oh please, both parties are FULL of idiots. Most of the people have no fucking idea what they are really going for on both sides. They don't really have a opinion, they are too fucking stupid for that, they just let the party they are *in* decide who they wanna vote for, republican or democrat, regardless of religion.

We care in Australia, i guess that care comes from us forcibly having to vote.

In case you haven't noticed, it's what everyone has been doing. Though there's nothing wrong with saving the banks, as long as we actually draw lessons from the financial crisis. Unfortunately we haven't, there's hardly any increase in regulation and supervision of the banking sector. It'll only be a matter of time before we end up in the same mess.

And who loses? That's right, the government and the people do.
It's business as usual again in the banking industry.

Many countries 'force' their inhabitants to vote, though that doesn't actually mean the majority of its people care or know what they're voting on.

I never claimed there weren't idiots in both parties, though the Republican party and the tea party especially really takes the cake.

How am I dumb when your not even intelegent enough to give a explaination for anything, your too stupid to type more than 4 words into the computer.

That's true, but we care.

From some videos of the youth of Australia I tend to think not. But then its more likely that a bad video becomes more popular than a good video.
