Erm, it's not even comparable really. It's more like playing a very limited RTS than a MMO. It's RTS style control but you only get 1 hero which levels up in game but doesn't carry over games.
And no it went f2p like 2 days ago, league of legends has been f2p though.

Let's not beat around the bush, it's a blatant rip-off of dota, a lot of the heroes and most of the items are exactly the same.

I never said it wasn't, and frankly, I could care less if it was or not. The original DotA was overplayed anyways, and whenever you tried to play it there would always be that one guy in the game from Korea who spent his days and nights playing it and could click 500000x faster than you. I've never really liked it or its various spin-offs since.

Tbh let's start a EIR clan. By just having one competent teammate my chances to win are multiplied by a thousand. You don't even need to be a pro, just some proper teamwork and coordination and you can win 2v5. It's a lot like EIR in that category, without your team you're nothing.

HoN is the superior product. LoL is the product of superior business model.
HoN has now adapted that business model into a similar format and it will show through in time.
The huge difference between the two games is that HoN is unforgiving in it's error and allows for greater achievement to the better player. You can Deny(kill) friendly creeps when they are low on life which means your opponent doesn't get full value and no gold. You can deny Friendly heroes if they are suffering from a Damage over Time ability. You can Deny towers. Not only that but the available skills and effects in HoN are greatly superior to those in LoL. The creativity of some skills really comes through. Personally I hate these MoBA games(thats the genre name) but I find myself playing HoN fairly regularly.
My trash account is brn4meplz and my better account is Phallicy. ALthough I've droped 70 MMR since trying to get a friend into the game, lol
