On-board audio these days is more than adequate unless you are using your system as an HTPC.

Dual core does sometimes screw up especially with older programmas and games. But since you dont get that much power out of a singel core there is no option ;(.

ATI products aren't THAT bad just yet, even if their drivers are horrible. nVidia are whores though. Buying their products is bad!

I do have to mostly agree on the Intel thing though, even if its really close Smiley

I never had real problems with my onboard, though I do get annoying static if nothing is playing Wink It's old though.

No, Vista still uses audio cards... Wink

My rig is the following, been running it since Vista release:

E6600 Dual Core
4GB DDR800
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775

I use onboard sound and it works great.

Audio cards are the one part that I've never hard real problems with:) Oh and RAM.. but that doesn't count Smiley

Not counting normal upgrades, in the last 5 years, I had to replace:
Motherboard - Twice, and the IDE controllers on this one are fucked and might force me to buy a new computer sooner than I'd like
Video Card - Once. A GeForce card died on me. My current Radeon card can be a pain though. Likes to reset a lot in some games.
Hard Drives - Ooh 5 times. Only good thing is that sometimes they replaced it with a bigger drive. Without spending any money I went from a 40 and 80 gig to  80 and 250 Smiley Only lost data once.

I got a sucky onboard, after formatting it kinda died, no drivers seem to work anymore so I had to throw in an oldskool soundcard Smiley.

I was under the impression that vista re-routed all sound work to the CPU so audio cards were kinda pointless.  So that all you needed was your basic on board sound (which is DD8.1 btw =P).
