Im kind of a big RPG fan... well i was. Seems RPGs dont really like to diverge off the beaten path.
MMORPGs are nothing but clones of EQ1/WOW.  Dragon Age and Diablo are basically mindless button mashers.
Elder Scrolls.... still good.

Picked up Demons Souls for PS3 while back. And it blew my mind. While Eastern RPGs mostly JRPGs pretty much play like FF with horrible mindless turn based combat, Demons Souls , is the most unique RPG i ever played.  No more mindless mob bashing with the ability to drink 100 health potions, each battle must be thought out before hand and require quick reflexes. Good news is Japan is finally recognizing that their typical JRPG is not up to snuff anymore. I read an article about how the big name developers see that JRPGs arent selling the way they used to and things need to change.

Saw this game last E3, and every video or screen shot has me more and more impressed.
While i was wishing for a more Monster Hunter type of game (MH is actually a VERY tough and addicting game), I am over all impressed and have this on my top 3 rpgs i want to play.
It seems to have a semi open world feel to it, as in im sure there are closed off areas but you can back track and explore wide open areas as opposed to closed off levels.

Thought i share this with RPGs fans since im drooling over the character design. The armor and weapons look amazing, and give a very classic western RPG feeling that seems long lost.

Oops name of game is Dragons Dogma. Releasing in March 2012.
Im a bit iffy on the gameplay but it is different from the 1000s of RPGs before it

A korean rpg.

Ok, so that means grinding 100 hours in order to be able to equip a broken stick. If you want to unlock the ability to loot you have to grind 1000 hours, killing 1 type of monster 1000000000 times.

Demon posession is real and it's not funny, it's the creepiest thing you will ever experience.

I would also like to add I watch fox news everyday all day and will continue to watch it while being proud of that fact. I'm sure you enjoy your communist news network just as much.

hmm interesting lack of gaming knowledge on this board.
recommend you read up AND THINK a bit before leaving dumb comments.

wasnt talking about PC korean free MMOs AT ALL or Diablo clones

Yeah just for the record Demon's / Dark Souls are made by From Software, who are Japanese and not Korean. And if it turns out to be anything like Monster Hunter I'll buy it in a second. I have somewhere around 300 or so hours total invested in that series.

It's the best of its kind.
Their loot system was executed really well, and remember, the maps are randomly generated.. How many other (good) RPG's can boast that?! Diablo 1 was epic, diablo 2 was a step in the wrong direction, but was still a decent game, diablo 3 looks even worse.

What is the game in the pictures Poppi? And also, have you finished Dark Souls yet? I did like 2 weeks ago, took forever, but totally worth it!

To me diablo 1 was awesome. But by the end of the game and all that online play. I was done. It was just a mindless fun RPG basher. then came Diablo 2... and it was pretty much the same thing as part 1. I seriously didnt get the fuss. Even with expansion it was pretty much a clone of Diablo 1.
It was just click click click, potion, kill 10,000 creatures and just collect loot, pretty much what Sachaztan  was bashing about earlier on another genre.

Now in days after playing Demons Souls I cant stand to play RPGs that see combat as a trololol walk in the park. DS changed all that and had a great RPG stat system to boot.

So games like Dragon Age where you just push buttons or click without seriously not knowing if you will fail are just boring. Almost feels like playing a Modern Warfare game where you got to be dumb to die. Actually MW is more challenging.

Sorry name of the game in pics is Dragons Dogma. Check out some of the pics or videos. Love the graphics and design. The AI yelling commands every 2 secs is annoying.

Diablo 2 was the first game I played online with my friends that lived near me, it was like a cult classic with us EVERYONE had it. And I personally only like action rpgs, turn based always turns me off. I grew up with playing secret of mana and LOVING it, and diablo 2 was in the same vein so I fell in love with diablo 2. and I loved the expansion pack even more, simply because i loved the druid so much.

i tried playing through diablo 1, but never got far because my friends and i were so obsessed with DII. I agree DIII is a huge step in the wrong direction, i'm quite excited, and very scared to see how it pans out.

We're clearly in a minority however. We're hardcore gamers -- how many of your friends that are casual have even heard of Dark Souls/Demons Souls? Diablo caters to a mass audience, as does Dragon Age, CoD etc.. which is why they're always popular targets for criticism. There are games for everyone. I love my RPG's, but I can't stand the pace/combat of the Witcher series. It's a damn shame that good RPG's instantly make everything else pale in comparison Tongue. What I was getting at with D1 vs D2 was that in D1 - the monsters were stronger, resistances actually meant something, spells were varied. In D2, you don't have time to check what resistance a monster has, you just hammer right click on any spell you can find and watch it look awesome on your screen, then profit from the millions of dead corpses that drop 1 or 2 gold each.

Remember though, mods do exist for both! The Hell is a fantastic mod for Diablo 1, but it makes the game so freaking hard! Median XL is the most popular mod for D2, but really that just increases monster numbers and introduces AOE spells for every class. I'm sure there are some good D2 mods there somewhere! D2's online was one of the main reasons for its success. I'll never forget the first time I got enigma or getting the keys to the Uber bosses!

By the way, what are your thoughts on Demons vs Dark Souls? I thought Dark souls was okay, but the open world destroyed it for me. There was also a lot of times where the game intended for you to die without knowing what the hell was going on, forcing you (regardless of skill & caution) to redo certain areas again and again!

What kind of gets to me is that one of the most hardcore and unique RPGs is on console and some of the worst most casual mindless games (WOW, Diablo, Heroes of Newerth, Dungeon Siege) are on PC, yet PC gamers call console players 10 year old idiots. Whatever, that was a  side note.

Good thing about Demons Souls is that if any gamer picked it up (long time RPG player or some COD kiddie)... they loved it. You may have to go through 300 reviews before you find a rating below 8.5. So obviously its a good game and people can handle dying 100 times. Just dont know why there arent more developers hoping on that genre. I mean it won GOTY on some major sites and nominated in the rest. I guess that hasnt flickered in any developers head.

I havent played Dark Souls yet, though i will FOR SURE. One thing im not sure if i love or hate is the random one time events/loot. Talking to person A but not B, X amount of times, after Y event but before Z event gets you this bow.

but the same is not truer for FPS. in FPS land all the kids are on console and not many are on PC. I visit my family for a holiday and play CoD on my brothers 360 and every server im in there are kids under the age of 14, when I am at home playing TF2 there might be one 14 year old on the server.

well i guess my overall point is that PC gamers have a elitist status they like to brag about. Pointing out flaws that console gamers (yes they are more immature brats) have pretending PC gaming is so mature.
COD is just bad to play with a mic on 360. If PS3 came with mics im sure i would be bad too.

But in reality some of our beloved PC gamers are actually 14 year olds who have generous parents that buy them video cards and what not and still have no idea what gaming is beyond COD plus haks.

It was just a side note i think some PC gamers need to STFU or open their eyes to whats going on in gaming today. Ive been playing console/PC games since late 80s, so ive seen how things changed on both sides.

Its the exact same ratio to be completely fucking honest. As i own both PS3 and PC and play shooters and rpgs on both. There are also considerably less people on PC who use mics, hence the illusion of less 14 year olds. (might i also remind you of the existance of more then 1 14 year old player in our small community)

Sad fact is, console rpgs maintain alot of fun value, where as few pc ones do these days. (dragon age was a piece of shit, shiny with no complexity and barely any customization and did not deserve to be the 'spiritual sequel' to Neverwinter Nights, 2 was worse. Witcher was by far the best of modern games.) Although to be completely honest none of them really compare to the older rpgs.

Also Demon Souls = Hard, DA = easy
