As an economist I can tell you the government does actually have a very precise value on each statistical life, and can even tell you how much, statistically - one statistical quality life-year is worth.

Assuming you live in the UK, anyway.

As a political scientists, I can tell you economists blow.  Cool

Lets start regulating sugar  Roll Eyes

tank, you would be probably okay if government precisely told you, today you can eat only this, tomorrow only that and so on. Cuz in the end,it would be in our best interest if they ordered us what exactly to eat,and what is most healthy, needed for us on certain day.
They should make table and regulate it,based on what you do and how much you weighty exact number of calories and sort of food that you are allowed to eat each day,so you dont get fat or dont develop some health problems.

Yes you can. You can't put a price on a SPECIFIC life - but statistically speaking, it's not that hard to do. Right now, in the UK, the value of a statistical life is £1,000,000, with an average value of a quality life year being £40,000. As much as you may hate economists, that's the values of lives politicians look at when deciding on policies that may save lives or life-years.

Unless of course, you political guys decide on something moral like "life is priceless" - where you are, following rationality, compelled to save any life at all no matter the cost.

Life past adult age is worthless to the state as a soulless organism unless 1 person outproduces it's cost in some avenue of societal contribution. Does anyone seriously think that government statistics do not have practical averages that they use when planning civilian infrastructure or just about anything? And what specific purpose would a singular price tag serve anyway, its predicted cost for the state of 1 person that's interesting since they already are tracking income by taxes.

I'm happy to have quit smoking, I wish I could 100% stop drinking as well. But the social pressure is immense where I live, and I'm very groomed in the habit already. The only thing I am proud of is that I actively avoid advertisement and do not watch TV.

omg lol smurf u made my day, in fact for sometime i was joking they will some day start to regulate salt first. It seems its real now, only power think tank of joint forces of EUcrats and USA could have calculated after huge effort that sugar is more dangerous than salt Cheesy  (i can understand them, fat ppl die a tiny bit faster before all their ATM functions expire, and so we should ehm 'protect' then Smiley )

And if you dont believe that ppl on top dont have calculations about price of one sheep, you are seriously naive. There are exact calculation how much cost is for sheep to get it educated, what sort of job and how long it should work to pay taxes, how many of sheeps can smoke so there is enough money to stole from taxes but where is the limit so goverment dont expend much more on healtcare then what it gained, etc...

But even if you manage to lay comatose in hospital, you have great price for system. And you would be suprised how very little ppl from healthcare will admit it. Why You think eutanazia is taboo. Of course foremost is moral quations, but I have speak with some ppl who admit privately, there are indeed big money from farmaceutical companys in it. Basically it is not in their interest to cut of support of almost dead ppl because gov pays big money for this support, sad no?

I can see why it is so strange. Actualy TV is very strong drug, easy and passive consumption -addictive, very good substitute for 'games' in Roman winning formula.

I am TV free for 3 years now, What is beneficial is that it forces you to manage your stream of information yourself, you check for validity from different sources etc...

If you stop watching TV and after some time then go to visit friends for example - its like direct fist to your face, I can assure You will consume the information in completely different way, you will be able to hear nice little nuances wording and such, beware of commercial though, you will be feeling silly like if they are talking to you and you are complete moron and last but not least better not say anything or comment, friends will think you are lunatic. But after wathing ad about how cool it is to eat Neurol Forte if you are not feeling well, just to finish it with quick '..and if you have little baby they will thank you for Neurol Baby for babies, if they cry, yay form 3 yrs up' like wtf???

Then it is the time that maybe you start to realize world around you in other colors too...

Smokaz, I think its OK this way, because you are like active you know. I think it is the same shift at 10 years ago when some ppl couldnt see possibility that there may be personal device you listen music on and it is not radio (passive consumption), some were even feared cause they could see that ppl will eventualy choose what they will be listening to, effectively creating their own playlist.

I do same as you with video, cannot be better. You hoose only good stuff that genuinely interests you versus mode 'I come back from work tired, fall on caouch as potato and let inhale all BS they are broadcasting.

most of the people still think that media in US(but also in most of the world) is 'free' and that they would never feed you with false information,if it's good enough for news,it's good enough for Jesus,so you blindly thrust what they say to us like good little worker bees.

I am thoroughly entertained that people think the internet is a free and unbiased source of information, and that better yet, a blog is a great place to get said information.

I don't trust anything on TV, and I don't trust the shit on the internet either. Seriously, the internet is a cesspool of biased info and outright lies as bad as FOX News or the BBC.
