Pretty much it's 18 to drive here in the US now too. Now we just need to lower the drinking age, make prostitution legal along with certain drugs.

you can do pretty much anything here with 18 years old,but we do have brilliant car law.
Before not so long, first 2 years, after your driving test, you weren't allowed to drive after 23:00 ...Now you are allowed, but you are not allowed to drive car who has more than 80kW motor untill you are 24,rly brilliant...not to mention that this law disables you for many jobs, what happens when family only has one car,and it's over 80kW,sorry kiddo, you have to wait 6 years before you can drive it,cuz we don't have the money to buy another car.

Aye, its 6 months supervised driving which is learners, then there's restricted after that which means you can drive unsupervised, can't drive between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am, and no one can be in the car with you. Family, partner or spouse are the exceptions. Can't drive anything but a car. No 4x4 and shit. 6 months of that and its full license.

slightly different in Aus.

You can apply for your Ps (unsupervised) only after 12months and when you have completed 120 hours. when on your Ps you cant have anymore then 1 passenger after 11pm to whatever time.

The world is so medieval compared to us LOL

I think it's just the fact that both our countries are sparsely populated. And the fact that most of our land is purely agricultural. farms, vineyards etc. And the government is too cheap to fund buses, so the younger of us who live far out of town benefit from our low driving restrictions Tongue

dafuq.

Rules in Melbourne are slightly different to QLD, it would seem.

Learners at 16, need 120 hours but can't apply for P's until 18. You get red P's for 1 year, which means no passengers. You then move to green P's which is multiple passengers but still 0 blood alcohol content for three years.

But yes, the way we do it is fantastic. The only beef I have with Australian law is that at the same time you're allowed to drive unsupervised, you also get access to alcohol legally, which is a terrible combination.

It still beats not being able to drink legally till 21. That's fucked up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_minimum_driving_age

By far the most common age around the world.

China, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan and India also have 18+ and those alone make up a pretty sizeable portion of humanity.

The funny thing about the ammount of hours "supposidely driven" can totaly be worked around if you had cool parents like me Smiley. That's why I find it funny because there is no way in hell that i'm driving 120 hours with my kid, I'll just write that shit in there like I did.

Excellent - and when your kid causes an accident due to lack of experience and ends up in a wheel chair fucked from the neck down, you can wipe his ass with that piece of paper.

OR - when your inexperienced kid causes an accident and kills my wife on the way to work, we can use that piece of paper to try and soak up the blood.......

Perhaps there is a very good reason your kid should have 120 hrs of training before getting behind the wheel of something that can kill people so easily??

The 120 hours is far to high and in fact causes an extreme number of teenagers to forge their hours. However, the experience is not what kills, its the bulletproof mentality of teenagers and arrogant perspective of the world which causes the deaths. Any body can drive well, its the behaviour exhibited by teenagers which is the main problem. Those being drinking, drugs, phones etc, reckless behaviour including speeding and general asshole behaviour, being that they believe that they are never in the wrong so any situation they involved they exhibit aggressive behaviour to other road users.

The Australian government knows this now and is reducing the amount of hours required either between 80-100 hours, but has been introducing ad campaigns and police talks to secondary schooling. One of the strategies is to scare the teenagers of a (real life) scenario of 3 teenagers in the car and they were involved in a car crash due to reckless behaviour. Its extremely graphic. However this does not change the "It wont happen to me mentality" of teenagers. If it wasnt, then 3 of my friends wouldnt have ended up in a car crash, one loosing a baby, the other narrowly breaking his spine (He is now a MMA boxer amd has his featherweight title).

So yeah, the Australian government is taking the necessary steps into the right direction, but whether its going to be that effective is up to the response of its audience.
