Right, they are the same genre thus identical.
Multiplayer, new graphics engine, AI, diplomacy, faction balance, combat mechanics, animations, ragdoll physics and more content and features than you can count. Those are all just minor differences. Why didn't they just add this in patches??

A better game attracts more buyers. The bigger the improvement to the game, the more likely new people will buy the game.

Scenario 1: New game- Same market, same expected profits. Revenue from 1 source.
Scenario 2: Update/patch old games, squeeze profits out of old releases, build loyalty. Make more money after patchs. New game, make MORE money. Revenue from 2 sources.

You all missed my point. Technically it would be near impossible to patch in all those changes as it was basically a complete overhaul of everything.
