He did resign from the military, he was the Director of the CIA when this scandal occurred. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that it's an example of political moralism at its worst. The people who demanded his resignation no doubt have their own dirty secrets just waiting for a similar incident to expose.

From what I remember, US diplomats and officials are allowed to have extramarital engagements as long as they are immediately logged and reported to some department, as honey traps are still a common technique for gathering intelligence. Not sure if the same rules apply to the CIA or military, but I bet similar rules on immediate disclosure exist.

That said, it wasn't like he was having sex with an Al-Qaeda operative. American public cares too much about who their officials have sex with, too little about what their officials do in government.
