So, after dicking around on YouTube for an hour or so, I was linked (from a Sniper Elite [the first one] playthrough) to this video via the wonderful related videos system:

At ~7:30 this guy mentions the use of the term 'oriental' and how it was offensive enough to influence his future relationship (or lack thereof) with this woman, and then the host agreed with him. I was baffled, I did a Google search, and found this:

It blew my mind. I've been using the term 'oriental' for years to describe pretty much anyone of Asian descent if I didn't know exactly where they hailed from, with no ill intentions at at all. To me, it just means 'someone of the orient'--someone Asian. Stuff like "Yeah, the oriental lady who came in with the large family was interested in renting out a boat, Jed [my boss]" has crossed my lips without a passing thought, and I've heard nothing of it either. Is it really that offensive? What do y'alls say?

Words are not in and of themselves racist, offensive, or otherwise "bad." People will choose to take these words as they will: some will simply not care about a word or its use, some will associate that word will negativity and be 'offended' by such worse, even though that 'offense' is something they've completely made up, and exists solely in their own mind.

The word 'oriental,'  as you mentioned, merely means "from the orient" (aka Asia) and is no more offensive than the word 'asian.' The only reaons I can see someone being offended by the word 'oriental' is because "The Orient" is an old-timey way to refer to Asia / Asians, from a time when "civilized" western societies considered themselves superior to 'those primitive orientals.' Other than the fact that it was maybe sometimes (but not always!) used in a prejudiced manner some time in the past, I can see no logical reason for someone to get upset by it.
