Does anyone have this game? I recently got it and I'm looking into playing some games, it's really an amazing game if you're into any kind of realistic simulator. I was a huge fan of the third one, Uboots in the Atlantic so it kind of sucks the new one is in the pacific with the americans but thank god they recently released a 'u-boot expansion' which basically allows you to relive silent hunter 3... in the pacific . (I'll mainly play the expansion) Nothing like sinking some ships with the most awesome thing the kriegsmarine ever produced! http://silenthunter4.uk.ubi.com/

Is the uboot expac a free content thing or not?

i played it, and it is fun the first few times but sailing for hours on end gets old, and since i refuse to use the cheaty aimy system i couldn't hit shit with my torpedo's and have to end up using the deck gun every freaking time.

Nope, it's a real expansion. The worst thing is though, the voices & commands aren't in german, where as in the old SH3 the crewmembers on your ship actually spoke german, adding A LOT to the atmosphere... luckily for us realism fanatics, the community built a 'fix' that brings in the german from SH3! We can always play the original although like I said, nothing beats playing with the germans & their uboots . You can fast-forward time so you don't need to sit there for hours. I for one loved sailing in realtime (occasionally), nothing like waking up, setting course and sitting back with a nice cup of tea while your ship makes it way to the target zone .

Not really man, you could speed up A LOT. (I believe x40 or even x60) You must've missed the further speed levels, you rarely ever had to sit around for more than 5/10 minutes if you didn't want to.

I have been playing Silent Hunter for some time, I have Silent Hunter 4 but I dont play it as much as I play Silent Hunter 3 with the GWX mod. I just prefer the atlantic and the u boats.
Its a lot of fun playing on full realism. There a bunch of tutorials on the internet on how to do manual targetting and such. Its really fun when you sneak past destroyer escorts into a juicy convoy and sink a few tankers then evade destroyers and depth charges for awhile.
Its extremely hard to actually finish a career. I always start mine in 1939 and the furthest ive been is to 1943. Once you die, your dead. You can always reload the save I guess but I choose not to.

I dunno the few times ive played multiplayer its almost the same as single player. I dont find it realistic to be on voice coms with the other sub commanders so I dont like to be on vent or TS. So pretty much multiplayer for me just adds a few player controlled subs hunting with me, which can be cool sometimes but like I said I dont like being on voice coms as it detracts from realism.
Silent Hunter 4 has pretty much the same multiplayer system except you can have one player controlling enemy destroyers and he can try to detect and destroy your sub.

I do it in LAN usually, coordinating assaults with your friends is much cooler than hunting alone. It may detract from realism but else multiplayer is just boring to be honest . Then you might as well with computer-controlled subs. What is the GWX mod? I still have Silent Hunter 3 and I just love the atlantic & uboots, much cooler than the pacific indeed but the graphics are much better on SH4 :/.

http://gwx.mysite.orange.co.uk/Adds a whole hell of a lot to the game, tons of new ship models, more realistic shipping lanes and convoys etc. Huge graphics improvement. Much more realistic escort AI, they are much harder to evade etc. Depth charges do more realistic damage. Aircraft do much more realistic damage, staying on the surface while being attacked by an aircraft is suicide and should only be done if its impossible to dive. There are also tons of other mods that you can download to increase the graphics level of SH3. Improved wave textures, torpedo damage mods, etc. Check out the forums at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/index.php tons of information on sh4 and sh3. tons of mods to look at etc.

Yes but you have to make sure that whoever your playing with has the same mods installed.
IE if you install GWX 2.0 you have to make sure that whoever your playing with also has GWX2.0 installed. Same for other mods. You can use JSGME mod tool to quickly install and uninstall mods, I believe its in the GWX install. If not just google JSGME and it should come up with their website.

How significant are the graphic enhancements? Any screenshots to compare?

It really depends on what mods you choose to install. Check out this forum http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=195Look through all the differant mod threads and choose which ones you want. GWX does a good job by itself but you can improve them even more with other mods. Id show you some of my screenshots but for some reason they look really low quality. heres a couple anyway I guess.
