I don't get the point of this. It says it's so an enemy can't capture a vehicle... but how does one even capture a vehicle in the first place?

No, it's not. The self-desruct button is for when you have an immobilized vehicle, and can't get it out because of this.

In older versions of EIR, enemies would leave the tank onmap, so that it would be taking up pop cap for the opposing team, and, until the SD button, the owner could do nothing about it. The SD button fixes the problem. Grin

ooh duh, ok, that makes sense. I thought that self destructing a vehicle was like taking it off map (meaning you get to keep it) because i had a vehicle immobilzed, and it wouldnt repair (because of the repair bug where if pios/engs are repairing something then die, it still "thinks" something is repairing it) so i destructed it, but then realized it was lost forever.

If it was immobilized, and you didn't have any more engies, it was probably the right thing to do. I hope you avenged it with the xtra popcap from it's death.

Can the Self Destruct button be (ab)used to prevent your opponnent to get veterancy for your almost-dead tank? Or maybe there is a timer on it?

There's a 30 second timer on it.

Also by the CoH game mechanic you still gain vet. if you damaged that tank and then it dies for a other reason.

Really? I have never seen that... You're saying if 4 M10s all have been shooting the same Panther, but an Airborne squad gives it the final shot, all the M10s get the credit for a Panther kill as well?

No, it gets some XP, more xp than if the phanter woud go offmap without dieing.

You gain xp for the damage & more xp if that thing dies, too.

Also works with selfdestruct since i actually saw my m10 go from vet. 1 to vet. 2 after a enemy tank exploded in the fow.

Hmm, Thtb, are you sure about that?  I didn't know that units got % experience based on damage inflicted...

Please show something ('proof') to support for these ideas. Because I have read pretty much every page on the CoH-stat site for example, but have never heard of this. The only thing that sounds remotely like this is the PE shared experience which is totally something else than what you are talking about.

Do a field test.
I have played tons of CoH games and have never seen a unit gain a level of veterancy when an other unit made a kill shit. And the first level of vet is easy, so I would expect to have seen that quite often if it works like you say.

Field tested, mother approved.  thtb and I tested self-destruct.  Whoever is last firing at the unit when it blows up gets credit.  Watch as his rifles get veterancy for small arms fire on my exploding PZ.IV, and his M10 gets credit for making sure the ground (and not my StuG) is properly tilled with tank shells.  screenshots and replays for your viewing pleasure.

Here we go, pay attention to the kill´s of the units.
Last unit gets the kill (and vet.) both rifleman got vet. after the tank suicided and the m10 gained the "kills" after i removed the rifleman from the area so they coud not killsteal Wink

I let my m10 attack him abit, then fire ground while we wait for suicide.

I noticed last year that if I had a panther and i shot a few tanks yet never actually KILLED them, I would gain xp at a higher rate between battles then the free xp.

I had that 1500 xp panther at that one point.   1 game he got 0 kills but assisted in killing 4 or 5 tanks and after the game he had gained almost 100 xp.  At the time I believed it was because of shared xp.

I tested it with m10s.   I would drive my m10 to the front, shoot twice at an enemy and run away and retreat.  After doing this for 5 battles straight I had a vet 3 m10 that had NEVER killed a tank in its existence.

I am quite sure that EiR reports xp for dmg done as well as actual kills, in some way.
