Are you sure? I swore Airborne had about 1-2 points above Infantry against soft targets.

I just checked here and it does confirm that they are indeed weaker (those numbers are from DD 1.2 though, but I doubt any changes have occured since then).

In any case, I'd always equip my paras with an arty brigade for the extra firepower.

No need to bail, unless you really dont want to play.  Most of us are new to the game and we dont know much.

The hardest to grasp part of HoI land combat (IMO) is the importance of movement. Your units lose Organization while moving, and the indirect effects of that make it very difficult for a slower enemy (ie infantry) to defeat a faster one (ie armor) - especially in areas where movement is difficult, such as mountainous regions or regions with large provinces like Siberia.  This is also why the Supply for Offensive feature is important, as it boosts movement rates.  It's also why Artillery and Antitank can be a faustian bargain, as the non-self-propelled version slows you down.

Just as an example - Say you attack a province defended by Armored units with a superior force of well equipped infantry. After a couple of days of fighting, you drive your opponent out of the sector.  Your units lost a lot of organization doing it though, and you're slow enough that it takes you a day or two to reach the sector, losing organization all the while. Meanwhile, the retreating Armor units have reorganized significantly and counterattack perhaps before you even reach the province. Your weary and disorganized units are completely stomped by the refreshed armor units and you are back where you started.

There are ways around that (usually by using the Support Attack and Support Defence orders), but it demonstrates the importance of leading an attack with fast units and backfilling/supporting with slower, heavier units.

I had significant problems with that when fighting the Russians as Japan until my SPG and Armor production really got cranking.

The other Extremely Important Point I would make is to look at the year on research topics.  You receive really significant penalties for researching technologies that haven't met their year requirement yet. There's lots of cases where you want to get ahead of the curve on research, but if you don't stay mostly within the curve your ability to diversify on tech will suffer. A lot.

now if only you lazy lot would get doomsday

I have both HoI2 and DD, but I can't play during that time period.

(Tip: As France you can realistically extend the Magionel(sp) Line all the way to the sea by the Historical 1939 WWII start date if you start in 1936(ie. the Defenses are lvl 10 Land Forts). So then Germany is pretty much doomed since it can't break though France.

Don't just get Doomsdays, get Armageddon as well. AI will actually do a D-Day in the correct spot.

I, sir, am also new. I got a crash course from my friend yesterday. Hopefully the fact the the Soviet Union is a enormous country will help me survive. I know the basic structure of the game.

Hahahaha. If you're put against a good Germany and if the US and Japan decide not to go to war, then all I have to say is "good luck" to you.

There's also the issue of lag. If we have a full roster of eight players, we're probably going to have lag.

We are starting a war. Not a battle, but a full-scale war. I must stress how important it is that we line things up so that the war goes smoothly. Make sure you plan your computer time ahead of time too (family computer, roommates, etc).
