The combat videos I saw from the PvP weekend looked like a clusterfuck. More like a counterstrike match with knifes-only and some guys that can cast magic. Not sure the fatalaties are going to be that sweet against anything other than a mob that's ust letting you bash it...

What about making Age of Ruins. I can see it before me: "And finally the Axis Tiger starts a fatality! He shoots the shermans treads and now rams him, his own barrel ramming right through the sherman... omg he shoots! Blood and metal is flying away on the other side... that was total annihilation ladies and gentlemen! Don't miss the nipples on the pinup girls on the planes either!"

Oh, and Age Of Conan has nipples =) And fatalities.
haha, they had a patch in the beta that directly said.. DON"T WORRY WE HAVE NIPPLES AGAIN! for the rest of the comments, ya I'm probably going to be like ucross. Buy it and hope its worth it. Balance won't happen right away, as in any game

'course it was a clusterfuck, you've got all these people introduced into PvP playing a game they've never played before. Once you played with and against teams that knew what they were doing it was a lot more fun. There were a lot of people who were just using the 123 swings and not using combos and they lost. The fatalities are fucking killer, they're great in PvE, but they were a lot more awesome when you did it to someone in PvP. I've been reading the betaleaks forums on AoC since they put it up, but from what I read and the PvP weekend, I will be getting the game.

All I know is I watched the Developers Interview and the whole thing was like "Omg! our combat system is so pwnage!.
When I was watching it I was like, 'Omg, this combat system looks so awful, not even the flying heads reedem's it!'

It's basically WoW with a more gory environment. The same stand there and swing till the opponent drops seems to apply.

What exactly did you expect? The main things it seems to have different is active blocking, collision, combos, cone healing, line of sight requirement for spells, etc...

And multiple directions of swings in order to overcome said direct blocking and to cause combo's which give you the special effects.

I personally don't find the combat system features that interesting. Attack directions combined with active blocking in those directions seem pretty random guessing to me, other than maybe predicting commonly used combos. To me it felt not much different than a bit of a mix of mindless beat'em up button bashing and the standard RPG buttonbar-bashing, including the combos. Want to see a combat system that is actually different or more interesting than the usual stuff? Try Mount&Blade. It's not a standard kind of game, but the fighting system is something many (MMO)RPG developers should learn from.
