Haha saw this on a newssite this morning, and to think they (people like Palin) want to teach creationism in US schools together with/instead of the evolutionary studies...

Denying evolution should be a crime Wink. This isn't the fucking Middle Ages, now is it?
All do respect, In europe we learn creationism as a "story" in "religion" classes, where it belongs, but we don't treat it as 'a truth'.

Good thing this was just a joke but in all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised if there were in fact right wing christians (and not necessarily in the US) out there who think like this :p.

I can't really decide what i believe as truth in terms of how we came about, I am a christian and i believe we aren't some random amalgamation of millions of years of evolution - the odds of that happening and producing something as complex as we are is just absurd. There are too many things about the human mind and body that point toward some kind of higher power guiding our development and what we are. What evolutionary explanation is there for the feeling of Love? Or of sorrow, melancholy, awe, joy? Also things like regret and remorse that have no place in an evolutionary view, they aren't necessary for survival, and if we initially started without these feelings people that developed them would have been inherently weaker than those around them...   Anyhow thats just my view -shrug- Intelligent Design seems fairly reasonable to me.

I'm all for people having free speech and whatnot, but really, this person needs to have their use of internet revoked. It's one thing to bash christianity openly and try to prove your point about evolution, and its another thing to make a mockery of it and put words in other people's mouths. By pretending to be a christian he only proves the point that he can't convince anyone with simple evidence. He's a cowardly little shit who with on authentic appeal so he just pretends to be what he wishes his opposition was. If I knew this guy personally I would go out and kick the shit out of him. Now I don't like everything about my religion. There are plenty of assholes and retards who make the good christians look bad, but seriously, atheism is now its own religion. It's now a hate of all other religions, a worship of ignorance. Sure, I don't demand that everyone else be christian, or even have a religion, but don't be atheist. Atleast be apathetic to religion, not hateful.

That right there tells me you don't hold up the core teachings of Christianity "Kick the shit out of him" eh, very Christian of you.

Anyway the arguments for and against creationism are ultimately pointless since god is beyond our understanding and experience. God could have intended evolution to happen as part of his plan or god could not exist, we will never know as as god who lets him self be know will be an idol, as it would also effectively take away our "free will" which god deliberately gave us and would seem odd for him to take it away.

I am an atheist (yet I study Religion and A level Smiley)  but I hope you haven't fallen into the same ignorant trap some atheists have of thinking Christians are all loonies, by saying all atheists are ignorant ass holes or what ever.

Believing in a higher power is one thing. Removing proven scientific evolutionary theories out of the school system and replacing them with a myth, no a legend about old Papa Doc beaming us out of the Garden Eden onto Hell on Earth because of eating an apple is another.

Honestly, if there is some kind of supreme being, and I truly believe there is, how the fuck would we know?
And how can man arrogate himself to think that he has it all figured out, denying others?

The difference between atheism and agnostisism is thin, it's the difference between ignorance and denial...
Can't right decide which I am, but I truely belief mankind was just a byproduct of evolution, and we don't know how long it'll last.
Theres no end in sight, we don't only slowly evolve (and is it growing bigger and living longer), we also do evolution ourselves right now.
Btw. Griffith, I don't want to bother you, but your lines make it look like theres no chemical explaination for love or regret, while it's more likely you just don't know it.

And whats absurd about humanity "happening"?
There are billions of galaxies, and most likely thousands of planets being able to hold life.
Well, sure, that we came out is very unlikely, but yet not more unlikely than anything else happening.
I don't want to bother anyone with my biologist "believes", or insult anyone, and I respect everyones religion as long as he's not bothered waging war versus the infidel....
So I won't post my oppinion on evolution here..

I think this thread is likely to get locked, it basically evolved into a discussion about religion.

Honestly if you really need Christians to hate I would suggest you start with http://www.godhatesfags.com/.

I honestly can't debate on the subject as I am employed by the Boy Scouts of America, a Judeo-Christian organization. I fall more along the lines of people should chill the fuck out about religion, respect each others beliefs and realize that someone praying in school is not going to kill you, much like someone refusing to pray isn't hurting anyone.

A huge portion of my job is going into elementary schools and recruiting kids age 6-11 to join our Cub Scouting program. I can now say I have been on the receiving end of an enraged atheist parent who was pissed that I was allowed to come talk to their kids.... something about not trying to tell their kids how to think Roll Eyes/irony

People just have an issue with treating each other with respect, if we could learn to do that religion would cease to be an issue.

Also replacing evolution with creationism is retarded as is saying that it is impossible for religion to coexist with science. They both have their place as long as they don't try to explain each other Wink.

Um.. Just to clarify, being an Atheist doesn't mean you have no beliefs or faith. It just means you don't believe in a deity or almighty entity. I don't believe there's anyone who is over the age of 15 years who does not believe in anything, essentially having a mind void of all reasoning and beliefs.

Also, science does not create or dictate what the earth or anything is. Science is the study of the natural world. Science is an abstract concept representing human curiosity to understand what is around them. So saying, "science creates or dictate what the world is," is false and most scientists would be most offended.

It is within my beliefs that people are ignorant if they cannot at least agree or believe that the theory evolution is plausible. However, people are also as equally ignorant if they believe that science is absolute. I quote this from Albert Einstein,

"...it must be admitted that our actual knowledge of these laws is only imperfect and fragmentary, so that, actually, the belief in existence of basic all-embracing laws in Nature also rests on a sort of faith."

Whether or not if you believe if some superior being sets the evolution of the human race in motion, there is no absolute certainly that either theory is true. It is up to the individual to determine what appeals more to them. The human mind needs an explanation for everything. People are naturally more biased towards things that are more compatible to their beliefs which is determined by influences and experiences.

So in summary, the inability to believe in both the supernatural and the scientific theories is ignorance, ergo, the most just and truthful judgment comes from the combination of all beliefs as a whole. Basically, have an open mind people.
