Mind you Akra. the german forces are the 3rd largest Amount of Troops in the Middle Eastern Countrys, 1st being the us, 2end being the UK. While the American foces lost over 20 000 troops the german forces lost under 100, of course this is mainly because they take a "Defensiv" role.
The German military is largely a defensive/peacekeeping force and is much smaller than the French/British.
Germany should put some more money in their military so they become a respectable military force again, right now they're just laughable.

when IFV's are actually better than tanks now.
Better is subjective here, they're probably best suited for the 21st century yes, there's no longer a big need for big badass fighting tanks as most engagements are no longer between countries. (Just wait untill the next war though)

lol agreed. I think most people are scared m ost of china and russia. Hell, right now i'm worreid about the p akistan and india situation and if india invades pakistan, china might use that as a potential reason to do what they've always wanted to do anyway and attack india which might escalate into nuclear exchange :shivers:

Thats fine, we gotta do something against overpopulation!
To the tanks:
You might notice that the Abrams and Leo2 are based of the same prototype, a Joint venture between western Germany and the US to develop the M72.
Both Tanks are roughly the same in their base versions, just the weapon and engine differ.
Recent upgrades have brought in far more electronics, so they are not that similar any more.
In any recent combat tests the Leo 2 had come out superior to any other tank, mainly due to advanced electronics, but those are likely outdated by now.
The KwS3 upgrade featuring the 140 mm cannon wasn't executed as theres no need for Tank vs. Tank combat anymore.
The PSO upgrade is rather similar to the urban combat upgrade for M1A2s.
And I think it's more innerpolitical problems with building up an Army, Germany tends to be a little pacifist after the recent world wars.
Tanks have no real place in todays situations, and will be replaced by armored troop transports and Airforce sooner or later.
Tanks could still serve as armored artillery, just add bigger guns.
Upcomming fuel shortages will make those heavy vehicles a little overpriced in use anyways.

Its Tank compared to Tank, not Nation with tanks vs nation with more tanks.

yea makes you wonder why we can't make tanks like that, or at least hybrid tanks. maybe nuclear tanks? lol fallout ftw isotypes in everything even soft drinks...
but anyway. I agree that tanks are a bit outdated but the thing is, in a big war, if there ever is one, tanks might be needed, then again, if i can fit 10 strykers for every 4 abrams in transports and still get the same firepower, i'd go with the strykers. They're faster too, maybe they can't take as many hits but the fact is, our survelence equipment is the best in the world and we see the enemy first in open battlefield first, so a main battle tank isn't entirely needed. NLOS Artillery, Helicopters, UAV's and Jets are really all you need to take out other armor and use apc's and infantry to hold territory.

The problem is without a proper war its hard to say how important tanks are in modern warfare.
At the end of the 1st world war the british got rid of most of their tanks because the didn't think they would need them anymore - so its probably a bit early to write them off just yet.

Nice try, but again you missunderstand me ; it's hard to believe that everything I write seems too complex.
What did I write about any nations?
The point is:
The Original M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2A4 had the SAME chassis, the SAME suspension, even the SAME electronics.
Only the Engine and Gun differed.
This was in view of several other arguments made here in this thread.

Oh yea, we are seeing the last generation of the tank. FRES seems to be every logistics officers wet-dream, no more CR2s for us

Have you guys even taken into consideration the ammo used in these platforms? If a tank is firing depleted uranium rounds, which the Abrams does, then it really doesn't matter the size of the gun, the shear heat and kinetic energy the round has upon impact with any material will vaporize it. So, when it comes to tanks capabilities, the rounds are the most important.

Not to mention the radiation that the shell releases which will mutate many future generations.

Actually, you don't live through being hit by one of those. What happens to organic matter is it "cooks" instantly. I have seen it first hand, we call them "crispy critters." Really fucked up if you think about it...
