As some people mentioned in the DoW II thread, Empire: Total War looks tasty. I actually went out and bought the Medieval 2 Total War gold edition a few weeks ago because I was on a huge medieval kick after getting hooked on the best fantasy series since LotR. It's a pretty damn good game, especially after you factor in some of the better mods like Deus lo Vult and the upcoming LotR mod.

Never played any total war games, but chaos, showed me this months ago, and I have the money for it nailed into my wall waiting for it.

If you've never played total war then i think you'll love it. I've been following the series since shogun and i find each new game is better but since rome the AI has just been so bad its an exercise in frustration and disappointment.

The Kingdoms expansion and the mods really helped improve the AI at least for battles in the field (siege AI and mechanics have been crappy since Rome: TW)

Total War has never made a game that I wouldn't want to try. Anyone not with us yet, http://www.twcenter.net/ .

Total war series is all about the mods. The vanilla game is next to crap as fas as AI is concerned.

I positively love this series, but I miss the great multiplayer games that Medieval I had and the successors never really quite grasped. Medieval I had some seriously badass MP that was just the right pace, and well balanced.

My only gripes are
1) battles in M2TW are a bit too small. Max of about 2000 men on a side if you have an AI ally. I want to see some 10,000 man battles
2) seige mechanics are horrid. pathing errors galore, poor defensive options, unable to garrison central keep of castles, etc.
But overall a great series.
