Uh this game is the shit. Probably the best total war game that has been released since medieval. The grand campaign is fresh, has some innovative new features and allows you to focus most on your macromanagement. The graphics are absolutely amazing, first rate for any game, much less a total war game. Finally and most importantly, MP battles are fucking back.  I played some solid MP games yesterday where skirmishers and artillery were utilized to pepper enemy formations and strategy and tactics prevailed over retardation. If you want solid MP, though, watch out for games that afford players above 10000 in funds because it turns into a 4 inch mortar fest. Your best bet is to grab some mortars for artillery but i think that even 12, 18, or 24 pounders will work if you keep them moving with you and protected.

For those of you who played medieval and wondered for the next....oh i dunno... 5 years, when they'd release the next total war game? It's here, finally.  No bullshit, no elephants, no onagers absolutely killing 100% of your troops before you engage, no longbowmen shanking your slow sword formations from 600 meters.....just a flat out good strategy game that puts emphasis on a reasonable army composition and playing well with that army.

There's absolutely nothing more awesome than an 8 player MP Empire:Total War battle in RTT gaming right now. Nothing.

The best part? I had a fuckton of cupons lying around for best buy and the game only ran me a whopping total of 5 dollars.

So is this game actually so good ?
I havent bought it yet, i never buy a TW game right just after release, past experience showed you have to wait for patches and mods to enjoy it.
But is this different ?
What about the AI on the campaign, on combat ? What about diplomacy ?

I'm loving it!  Haven't had too much time to play yet (busy with work, out of town, etc.) but I'm really enjoying the new gameplay mechanics of trade, sea interdiction, technology research.

FYI there has already been one patch, and another is planned for next week.  Looks like the patchs will be smaller and more frequent because of Steam.  (Woohoo!)

Diplomacy has been improved a bit.  Now you can offer state gifts to countries to get them to like you more.  There is also a great interface for seeing what every country thinks of every other country.

There is also a nice addition where if you declare war, you have the option of asking your allies to help you out.

However, it still needs a Civilization IV style option for "tell me what you want in exchange for X?" instead of having to guess repeatedly.

That and "Make peace with" and "Declare war on" diplomacy options. My allies are at war with the entire world...residual wars that I long since made a peace with.

I get so irritated at the AI in diplomatic relations.  We're allied, have good relations, and they won't trade on an even level.  Hell, sometimes they won't trade even for something like 6 techs to 4 techs.

Ah that sounds bad. Diplomacy was always a deterent for me. I really loved the campaign game. But AI never agreed to anything like ever. Never sued for peace, never agreed to submit even with one province left, it was impossible to do anything. After a while it blew the immersion of the game.
And battles without mods, the AI acted so retarded that you would win no matter what.
I thought it was going to be better this time! I mean how many TWs they have to do to work this stuff out :p

The AI is much better in-battle than before, to be honest.
Though, I am playing on VH/VH

Playing on Hard right now and the AI on the campaign map is only occasionally challenging I must say, now that I have the whole of Canada/florida/Caribbean and Mughal-India as Great-Britain I pretty much make 25+K per turn which means that no nation can stand up anymore. And its only 1740 :/.

I'm thinking of restarting on VH but then I have to do those 80 turns over again so I think I'll probably get bored of that really quickly unless I play as another nation, but no nation as as awesome as GB.
