Just as a simple thought I was wondering how hard it would be to actually include your officers in the squad that they are overseeing. In all actuality if you think about it you would never have an officer running around behind your infantry squad, no he would be right there in the group with the rest of the guys.

What I am suggesting is something like in Dawn of War or DOW2 where you have the option to actually attach your officer (LT, Capt, or Ofc.) to the actual squad so that he isn't just so darn easy to be sniped out, or run down by that nasty Puma/AC. All of the squads around him, and the squad that he is in would still benefit from his bonus.

I know that there are those of you out there that are just going to say L2P, but this is about more than that. I am not suggesting, or calling on the realism card for this argument because this is only a game, but I do thing that this would improve the overall playability and functionality of the "officer units".

The soldier you click your Sniper to shoot at, the sniper will shoot exactly the soldier you ordered it to shoot at so it'd not make much difference if the officer were in the group or in the open

Well in vCOH you can "attach" the officer to a squad so it follows it around, we could probably put that in.

I understand this with snipers, but it is still something that would be a big change. For example if you have an Puma that you order to attack a bren squad at a glance, you may not notice the LT that is in their ranks. This being as it is your LT would not be the number 1 target of choice as he commonly is when he is just running along behind your squad.

If the unit is attatched to the squad and a Recon unit attacks it, I think that you can still order it to shoot the officer first. I think all the units attack the man you click at. I don't know if anything would change. I'd rather keep my officer away behind the troops so that the unit must bumrush it in order to get it

Cool, its just something that I think would be a benifit, it always seems that any time that I try to use an officer they are always insta killed due to being "priority 1" on people's hit list. If I am going to pay the resources to gain this bonus, it would be nice to actually get 20 seconds of function from it before they are knocked out.

Another idea that would go along with this (to ease you fears Nightrain) and provide that everyone can play their company how they chose based on their play style would be that the option to have your officer oversee just like he is now, but you could also have the choice for him to "join" the unit if you wanted to.

The attach officer to Unit function is already in EIR:R (The follow unit around one anyway)

Yeah, I know this, I was just using it as an example of how it is right now, and what your options would be if it were changed.  Smiley

Oh touché, I don't even use that attach thingy. I just bind him to an individual number from the blob or keep him in a 'group' with mah riflenaders.

I am still trying to get in the game lobby period so please excuse a newbie's comments Smiley

FYI about priority of fire for snipers.... I was just a NYARNG Infantry NCO but it is always a priority to shoot the officers first to disrupt operations. You would look fer the officer first to try n take them out. :)BTW  If we didn't like yer LT we would salute him, other wise known as a 'sniper check' because of this very rule Smiley BTW this was only on an exercise and to pull a leg but it has been done deliberately Smiley

@ NCOIC hey no problem with the fun and games, after all thats what we are here for.

The subject of this thread though is to see if officers can be joined with the other fighting units. I probably made a mistake when I mentioned snipers in the first place. I don't really remember when I lost an officer to one. (most officers I have seen take more than 1 sniper shot to kill) It is mainly when a squad of assault grens or a puma run up and target the officer that is with the infantry squads just to take away the bonus he provides.

It would be nice, as it is right now if you are trying to run a squad away from something and you have an officer attached to the squad the officer will actaully run forward in order to stay behind the troops. It doesn't really make sense for your officer to go running into the MG that you are trying to get you troops away from just in order to maintain a "following distance."

Function in attachment like the Command tank follows within command range of it's target?

Correct, I actually hadn't thought about the CT. Sadly I don't think that this would actually apply to it seeing as you wouldn't be able to put a CT into a unit.

Seems like he wants it to run around in sync with the squad it's attached to like an attached hero in DoW 1.

I don't necessarily like the implications of that. Because then it would buff the squad too much as the officer would be taking damage received away from the squad.. and how would medkits work then? it seems much more reasonable if something like this were ever to be implemented to give it a command range/supervision.

It is impossible in Essence Engine 2 to have a member 'join' a Squad external from reinforcing them. And even reinforcing is technically not having a member 'join', it's just re-drawing and re-calculating that member. So unless you give me source code for EE2, we can't do anything. We can add a 'follow' ability if there isn't already one (I haven't played Brits in EIRR for too long.) Maybe we'll make it so attached Officers are harder to hit, easing the demand on micro.

Yes this is exactly was I was thinking. If it isn't possible though I guess that making an attached officer harder to hit would be the next best thing. I for one am absolutely horrible with micro, and im sure that there are more people out there like me.
