My computer blew up a few days ago, and since it's already about 6 years old (and repairing it would cost a lot + take a long time) I've decided to buy a new one.  I'm not very good with the technical things in computers, but I noticed that new computers come with Windows 7 and not Vista anymore.  Not sure when this change happened (I don't usually keep up with computer news), but I was just wondering if CoH and EiR would work on Windows 7.  I remember reading a few years ago that installing CoH onto Vista was different than installing it onto XP, so I'm assuming that there will be some differences between XP and Windows 7.

If there are any major differences that would make CoH or EiR hard to install, could someone also point those out?  Thanks in advance.

damn, lucky you.
I don't think there would be any problem playing CoH/EiR on Windows 7.
In fact, the performance could be better.

I have been running 7 for months and It works great for EIR and COH and all the other programs I use. I have the x64 Ultimate version and all my 6 PC's here are running it as well. The only thing that I have had issues with is installing my printer CD so I can use all the wireless features but the normal printing installs directly with W7 NP. Also I have a ton of old Win98/Win95 kids games that most won't install as they want 8 bit video and even with the XP Mode virtual PC for W7 it only goes back to 16 bit. I am a Tech Net Microsoft Technician and have had access to the W7 OS for 2 months, You will love it.

Dafuq man, don't ask for proof if you'll refuse it if it's not in your favor, logic fallacy for the bloody win.

EiR and CoH both run perfectly fine on Vista. Hell, CoH has DX10 support so it'd be rather pointless if it wasn't supported by Vista. Personally i'm off out to buy Win7 today or tomorrow as it is a vast improvement on Vista... (and because I need 64-bitness)

x86-64 (64bit)
x86 (32bit)

64 bit allows you to handle more RAM, and in general is more optimized than 32-bit, it's alot to explain.

PS;

Also got my copy of Win7 yesterday on release day, it's fucking epic. Good enough to rival XP.

Also due to the thread starters question I feel I must post this additional note...

The performence increase from Vista to Windows 7 is notable in CoH when playing on the highest settings (non-DX10, DX10 fails framerate-wise and provides no benefit)

Vista - CoH Benchmark;
Min - 16.81
Average - 26
Maximum - 48

Win7 - CoH Benchmark;
Min - 21
Average - 30.71
Maximum - 62

So a rather evident increase in performence.

How about from XP to Windows 7?  Would it be an even bigger leap?

Well since this thread is loosely related to my new computer, how does this computer look?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9532455&type=product&id=1218120174704

Looks ok to me.  6 gigs of ram and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit sounds nice.  The only games I plan to play on it are CoH, Starcraft, and maybe SC 2.  I might venture into the realm of FPS's, but I might not even bother since I already have a PS3.  The other things I want to do with my computer are word processing, internet browsing (Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, etc), an iTunes library, webcaming, and video editing. I'm pretty sure none of these things are too out of the ordinary since I did this on my old rig, which was about 6 years old when it died.

The only thing that looks a little questionable to me is the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100. I did some research and most of the things that I looked at said that the graphics card is garbage for gaming. What do you guys think? Is 256 mb of video memory enough for CoH?

Yes/no? If no, any affordable suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If the graphics card is the only thing that isn't that great, then any suggestions for a better one?  I could just buy the rig and replace the graphics card afterwards.

Both PC's have *really* shitty VGAs tbh, it will be barely enough to run CoH at 1024x764 mid graphics.

XP gaming performance is usually better than vista.

That means basicly no graphic card, I love how they write shit about 8 ghz CPUs in total (when it's dual core), or ram HDD etc, they just show big numbers, well something like GTX 260 doesn't sounds good enough, basicly all integrated grahpic card are piece of shit, not worth buying, search on the net custom builds and just buy it online, or RL shops just write parts on piece of paper or something and give it to seller, buying in super markets is always fail.
