Rommel +4. In ww2, or any war, there is perhaps no better example of a true soldier in a classical sense. Respect for his enemies was his greatest weapon, and the fact that he served his country but not it's ideals makes him a rare gem in German military history from that period.

Genghis Khan, conquered from the Pacific to Poland in his own lifetime. Started with nothing, literally nothing. Once his empire reached a certain size I guess he stopped being a general really, but created paper bank notes, a banking system, a postal system, a freedom of religion.
Anyway, probably one of the most influential people in history, and one of the greatest generals/leaders the world has seen.

Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout Corp commander of the 3rd army corp of the Grand Armee and arguably one of the finest generals in history that does not get enough recognition for his achievements.

Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden (Gustav II Adolf)

But seriously...
"Ah! The generals! They are numerous but not good for much!" - Aristophanes
My most favorite warrior on the other hand this far Miyamoto Musashi. Partly because of my practise in Iaido and Jodo. But also because of his view that with the right spirit and of course with training one man can overcome ten men, 10 men can overcome hundred etc.
(I live by his creed.)
If youŽre intrested in fencing and history, iŽll give you a tip and read "The Book of Five Rings" + the more difficult "Hagakure" that is also written by a samurai.
It would be fun to find something similar written by a european, but iŽll guess the most similar texts are written by Machiavelli...

Stonewall Jackson
Stonewall Jackson is a stellar choice Crazy. I knew you wouldn't let me down. I don't know if u knew this but 90% of all armored warfare is modeled after Stonewall Jackson and how he maneuvered his cavalry. Jackson was master of the cavalry. Apologies to Malgaroth because General Veers is frickin' amazing and I forgot about him. You win a cookie Mal.
And Erwin Rommel is another great choice. It's true that Jackson's tactics are essential to armored warfare, but Rommel had actual tanks and was able to use very basic and effective tactics from blitzkrieg to my more favorite Ghangus Kahn strategies of surround the enemy and attack from all sides.

I've read some of Machiavelli but I'll be sure to check it out. Great quote and very true. I just love Scott because he basically won the Civil War with his Anaconda plan and led the United States to incredible victories. Good choice of generals because I do admire the Generals that try to better themselves as well as the men they lead into battle.

Nev is from New zealand if I recall correctly. And frankly I don't blame him, those inane kind of French jokes are way too trendy and usually anything with that kind of "huaw huaw" braindread sort guffawing implication reflects the most basic and lazy readings of historical context possible.
On a related note, the brilliant general Wellington (the commander of the British/allied forces at Waterloo) was once asked who he thought the greatest general of all time was. His answer?
"In this age, in past ages, in any age, Napoleon."
He was one to know.
