I'm anticipating STO much more than the star wars game, simply because for the last decade, star wars = big build up, massive let down, across the board. Tie Fighter was the last game that was worth it's salt in that series.

Hicks, the difference being, and correct me if I am wrong, is the lack of movement or shot blocking terrain in game. I haven't seen anything in any vid that required maneuvering other than to bring weapons to bear.

Anyway, I would plan on something like a Cruiser, the Escorts seem very tactically limited.

Jinker, Knights of the Old Republic was good stuff, as were the FPS's.

Then you may stand corrected, for any objects that get in your way WILL block shots and possibly cause a loss of sensor lock. One of the devs were talking about how they escaped the superior firepower of a larger vessel by using the nearby asteroid field to screw with the enemies ability to maintain a good weapons lock until he could get far enough away to engage warp and promptly GTFO.

Clutter doesn't make for good promotional videos... They use big, wide, open spaces where they can fully show off the ships, rather than showing everything tactically possible.

Cruisers can take a beating and support the fleet in a combat role, Escorts are capable of purely dealing out a large amount of damage.

IF the game lives up to the series, in terms of what they define an "Escort" is capable of, then their damage dealing potential should be significant and not overlooked. Not only that, it would seem Escorts will keep an element of speed and maneuverability - Something higher tiered Cruisers and Science vessels will lack.

Hell, i was sorely tempted to go Escort just to get my hands on a Defiant.

Can't you still do that by getting ships of each class as Lionel told me? So you could run a Cruiser and Escort, just not at the same time?

For PvP I think it will be all about the Science vessels though. You will need at least 1, in your group. My concerns are mostly PvP related, and non-cloaking glass cannons hold no advantage over cloaking glass cannons. At least with Cruisers you might be able to absorb and distribute that damage.

If it was Star Wars or B5 or any other space game I would play it.

Its the genre, not the IP I care about =)

"Glass Cannon" Is a somewhat misplaced term. Escorts are damage dealers, but they arent pushovers in health terms. Infact, the game, being based on it's customization can have you come up with some interesting set outs.

Needless to say, Escorts wont die in a heartbeat, they will live long enough to do damage, and thier speed will ensure that if you DO collapse one of thier shield arcs, they can dictate which next one will be pointed at you - As well as which one of yours they want to pick apart.

As for cloaking, as far as i'm aware, only the Bird of Prey will be able to recloak mid battle, the rest of the Klingon ships will have cloak as a first strike tool. Dont forget that shields are down whilst cloaked, making it a rather dangerous gamble if your facing any Science ships.

Wolf, theres nothing wrong with Trekkies, as long as ya know when and where to be one. You dont see me ranting about Trek in every other thread do you? Tongue

Yea, PC gaming 4tW.

Definitely a Cruiser, I like not having to rely on others, and the Cruisers have the most options it seems.

However, Science vessels also look promising, mounting good shields and having the ability to disable ship systems....

Science vessels have a wide variety of roles btw.

They have the most "Balanced" combat capabilities when compared with  Cruisers and Escorts.

Being able to disable ship systems WITHOUT the use of a Bridge Officer ability (Yes, Cruisers and Escorts can potentially train one of thier Bridge Officers to be able to target a specific system) Which allows Science ships to focus on other Bridge Officer abilities.

Science vessels are capable of detecting cloaked ships, however i'm still aware as to the how, and the efficiency of how detection will work.

On top of that, they will also deal in making life a general pain in the arse for your enemy as while Cruisers can defend and potentially buff friendly vessels, Science vessels can debuff enemy vessels. Apparently alot of the debuff's involve the deflector dish somehow... But thats getting a little too indepth there for reasoning.

Is anyone here considering the lifetime subscription?

It's 239.99 USD which is about 150 GBP. My thought is that if the 12 month subscription they are offering is 75 GBP, then how much will it be to play it monthly? About 42 GBP for 6 months I reckon, same as WoW.

However, if I play it for more than 2 years (which I highly suspect considering the game's potential for future expansion), I'll have saved myself money and be able to play it at any point, even if I end up not playing for a year for whatever reason.

What do people think?

Meh, there are worse devils than Star Trek Online.

Oh, and we should definitely make a fleet, you need at least 5 people in a group to make that the initial fleet.

How about we call it the Europa and Io Reserve Fleet?

Basically like a lifetime stripclub membership would be until you get old and grumpy and your wiener goes soft.

Then again Osprey, if you happen to father a Vulcan or a other sort of klingonish troglodyte or perhaps even you find out one of your nephews is a hardcore trekker, you have the perfect christmas gift. For years the family will be talking about Ospreys expensive gift to his favored person.
