Nugnug's joke is quite funny while being non-offensive, actually.

Didn't see that one. But even so, it's in sour taste to joke over a dead man :/

It's just dark humour. To be honest, your automatic reflex would normally be to turn the car (and yourself) away from the incoming vehicle. What he did, turning himself into the danger zone, is quite an extraordinary act.
You ought to have some wimp reflexes then.

You ought to have some wimp reflexes then. It's called survival instincts, hence why the driver seat is usually safest seat in the car. (Not just because of the air bags and what not)

Despite how much you'll claim how you'd do the honorable thing - and how much you'd want it to be true, Unknown is actually right - your first reflex will be to save yourself, since you wouldn't have time to even THINK about saving someone else.
There's joking over a dead man and there's flat out insulting them. Nugnug joked, Nimitz flat out insulted.
Actually, Unknown - the seat behind the driver seat is the safest.

So? Let me insult. I hope someone more competent takes over.
brn4meplz edit: I'm leaving this up here so people can see what an asshole you are. There is a time and place for almost anything in life good or bad. These forums are not the place for disrespecting the honourably deceased.

Dude if you are a knowledgable driver (most of us arent) and have any knowledge of how a collision works (most of us dont) and you love your wife it seems likely to me that you make a split second decision

I think the extraordinary here is that he was able to make that decision in the shot timespan given.

I always knew there was a reason why I disliked you more than any person I've ever met. Now the reason's apparent. @Nug - indeed.

It's not that hard of stretch emotionally. Survival instinct is the biological imperative, but when continuing factors come into play(wife/child) people will make the emotionally correct choice. If he wasn't emotionally committed to their future together he would have attempted to save himself. His act only strengthens the case of his love for them. Survival instinct can reach beyond self. Thats what makes civilization work. Granted your average Joe is going to look out for himself if a complete stranger is going to die. However the entire Military system is based off potential sacrifice for the good of the whole, namely the continuation of your way of life.

I agree brn - but that still requires you having time to make the choise : and the simple truth is that not everybody's brains will be able to react fast enough in such a situation. If time were stopped, or slowed down in such a situation - for you to think it over - yes. Most people would easilly, without a doubt give their lives to save the lives of those they care about. However, what me and unk are saying is that it's damn impressive the man managed to process the situation and override his survival instinct.
As for military - in quite a lot of cases it's also a question of survival. Desert from the military - you will be killed. Stay in the military - there's a chance of survival while fighting.

As long as internally he had convinced himself that these people were his future he wouldn't need any additional time. It could be as simple as turning right was easier then turning left. I'll grant him the benefit of the doubt and say he made a phenomenal choice but time beyond carrying out the action had little to do with it.
As for desertion. Maybe in a conscript system(which have by and large failed throughout human history) Volunteer organizations have always surpassed conscript units in performance and discipline. You'd rather have a blank file on your flank then a man who didn't want to be there. fear of consequences has nothing to do with that. It's a mindset

Yea, Military really has nothing to do with fear of punishment, but those people you serve with become your friends and family as cheesy as that sounds.
As for the actual topic, its sad, if only he had had time to get the whole car out of the way.
And no, you wouldn't even have to think about it.

Again, in those type of split-second situations survival instinct takes over and you don't think clear. You're overrating your own, and human's, ability to make 'rational' choices in these kind of situations.

It's not a rational choice.
It's just pure instinct for most people, you are extremely protective of your offspring.
When you have one Unknown, you'll get it.
As for soldiers, you already know what to do, and thats cover your buddy.
