I know it's something that's always just "been there" as far as vcoh goes, since the game started afaik. And I didn't really notice it that much until doing work on the EIRR Wiki, but is there any reason why volks and grens can build wire and sandbags and US needs to unlock (given it's always been a T1) the simple ability? Or why tommies can only build trenches? I don't play PE, but can PGs build any defenses?

Does any of that even matter since usually only few players take the time to build these defenses anyways?

It is this way because its the way it is in vcoh and we couldn't care enough about the balance of it.

in vcoh riflemen can build observation posts though while volks/grens can't. so yes, when you think about it it might be unbalanced...

Change it so Rifles can build defenses, make a t1 that lets them do tank traps. Victory.

I just feel that all infantry should be able to build wire and sandbags, maybe take away trenches from tommies since you can say their usefulness is on par with tank traps.

TRENCHES OWN.

They count as a garrison item, so if somebody uses assault on you, jump in, the assault cancels, if they assault while you are in it, jump out, assault cancelled.

and they grant a sight buff, and you can't be crushed, and your inf doesn't jump around like idiots when arty drops on you.

and no riki, a trench is not on par with tank traps. one reason being tanks can drive over trenches.

Which is why it should be built only by sappers unless a doctrine ability grants it to tommies. pretty much leo and ampm are only reinforcing what I'm saying.

Trenches are THE CW defensive item. They should not be building sandbags.
