Was wondering if anyone here played HD2. And your thoughts.
If not im going to try my best to recommend it to you guys, bc its tactical and WW2 theme. And honestly few games come close to what this game delivers. So I think the EIR community should like or try this game.
Few shots
This game offers lots of flexibility and options so i will start off in the beginning.
This game can be played either 1st person or 3rd person. You select between 1-5 commandos from a roster of like 30. Each having skills that vary. Str, stamina, shooting, medical, lock picking, stealth etc.
Things like str determine how much you can carry in your pack without it affecting your stamina too much. So a person with high str might be your heavy weapons guy or your mule for ammo and rockets or explosives. Stamina is affected by your speed. There is stealth, walk, jog, and sprint. The more you carry the more you get fatigued as you sprint and cool thing is the more shit you got on you the more noise you have.
So a tactic I use is if i got my squad and we need to operate in a building. We drop our packs, carry just grenades and ammo and do our business and pick up our stuff later. So as mentioned items can be equipped and exchanged and picked up in game. I had a sniper shoot of my helmet, so i ran over and picked it back up and put it on again.
All stats level up as you use them. So fatiguing your guys alot adds stamina bonuses. Shooting increases acc, etc.
Another tactical option to do missions is point a gun at a person or shoot their hands so they drop their guns. This may cause them to surrender, you can capture them then steal their uniforms, and sneak around like that.
Most vehicles can be used. Tanks, trucks, etc can all be part of the way you want to do a mission.
There is a variety of missions you must do in order. There is no grand story line. Just missions. But cool thing is you dont know how long the mission will be. One mission lasted about 15 minutes where i had to use a underwater submarine and our team got on board some u boats stole the enigma machine, then planted explosives on the u boats. In and out. Others you find out go to shit and 1 mission ends up being 3 missions where you have no chance of gearing back up inbetween them. So you never know if you should bring 20lbs of gear or 200lbs. Better safe than sorry.
Most of the time you will be commanding your squad in game live. You can do this by selecting numbers on a side bar menu. Like press 0 for "select all", or press 1 for first commando. Then a second menu will pop up offering like move, shoot, etc, and third menu as well. This mechanic works freaking great and offers you many options that do work fine and also allows you to operate whispering (so to avoid contact but has limited range of how far your commandos can hear you) or shout (which lets you give commands much further but then the nazis hear you).
I was able to tell my sniper to perform overwatch on me while i sneaked into a city and only shoot if im in trouble. While in the city i was spotted climbing a ladder. I was like oh fuck as the german pointed the gun at my face as i was climbing the ladder. But he quickly went down as the AI sniper took him out.
You can also use a over head map type of command as well that lets you use "go codes" and give them specific routes and actions to take. Kind of like the original Rainbow 6. Pretty cool making up plans where everything goes without a hitch.
Online mode is mostly like 16v16. Its fun b/c the weapons are realistic and so is movement mechanics. But you miss out on the good parts of team work of taking down a much larger force.
The expansion offers co-op. But the maps arent as good as the original.
So stick to SP mode, but if you like it you will find more life in MP as well and in the expansion. Its just not as well done as SP is.
Lengthy i know but this game is a jewel of shooters. It throws you in a mission and offers you about 20 ways to do whatever you want. Steal a tank, or put a explosive on it so when the alarm goes off you can take it out. Long distance MGs and snipers or stealthy up close battles or disguise your way into the base.
