I was a smoker for 20 years, 2 packs a day.
No, no one forced me to smoke. But what they did do was advertise in a way that was enticing to a young person who does not have the maturity and life experience to make the right long term decisions.
They bait the weak with a carrot, then hook them.
As an experienced adult, we are able to make rational decisions and choose to walk away from the cigaret or the game. The problem occurs when manufactures (both game & tobacco) market the young and inexperienced with unethical means. Specifically targeting a market that just doesn't know better.
I thought you didn't believe in social conditioning and the like, ect. ect.? |

Most of my knowledge about WoW came from friends who tried to get me into it, i think i played for about a year before i got bored but i played because my friends were playing. One of my friends who plays, actually lives on my street. I don't really talk to him much as he doesn't really come outside anymore because hes a 'professional' wow player Lets also note, its not "hey dude wanna cigarrette?" its "hey try out this game its cool." Its alot more innocent form of peer pressure. |

Unless your friends ACTUALLY begin to shun you no way can you say its being forced upon you. And your friends arn't exactly blizzard employees, so even then you cant say its unethical game dev moves. |

As the game is designed with friends inviting friends (there were 3 free 15 day trials in every box when WOW came out) yes i can. And dark peer pressure covers both the direct 'force' that you keep arguing about, and the more subtle subversion of multiple friends doing something and telling you how awesome it is. (which is always more effective) |
