Officials are paid with tax dollars to uphold the laws put into place by the politicians you elected. Your rights are protected by the constitution of your country - created by the politicians you elected.

You have every right to not answer questions. The law and the constitution protects your right to do so (or not do so).
However: The law is also there to protect the people around you from potential threats. It is their duty to ensure that all individuals are safe within reasonable means. If this means they need to detain you to ensure you are who you are, and that you are not a threat to the people around you, then they are full filling their responsibility. If you refuse to simply answer thier questions, then they need to seek other methods to get the simple answers

If you answered their questions and provided the identification they asked for; they would be full filling their duties, the people around you are more assured of their safety, you are not detained or delayed, and life goes on.

So the thing is, in a free country you are more than capable of exercising your personal freedoms. Just don't coming crying o us when your refusal to answer a simple fucking question results in you having a bad day.

Their system allows for many appeals and other bullshit tactics that prolongs the event. Their system also allows violators to reduce their sentences with plea bargains on good behavior. So really when it comes down to it, no one really fears the death penalty. It is an idle threat that happens very seldom.

If the penalty was swift and harsh, it would be much more of a threat.

The jails and prisons are basically torture chambers that NO ONE wants to be in, the waiting period between trial and execution just makes it WORSE for them. Every day their life is an absolutely shitty existance where they are just waiting to die. Same goes for what you said about appeals and good behaviour, it barely happens ever.

Case in point:Singapore. All it takes to be hanged there is carrying 15 grams of heroin and be of 18 years of age. You automatically get a death sentance and pardons are very rare (if they even happen at all). Compared to the population Singapore has the most executions in the entire world and most of these are because of drug charges. They also have comparable laws concerning all illegal drugs.

These laws only have a marginal (if any) effect on addiction and drug use.

I don't think it would be intellectually justifiable to judge the effects of tightened airport security by the amount of terrorists that were dumb enough to get caught by it. The largest effect it has is obviously 'preventive', i.e they KNOW there's heightened security so they're not going to risk some half-assed attempt at hijacking or bombing an airliner any more. (They'll only risk it when they have a sound new method, in which case existing security will obviously be insufficient)

I really don't think we should question heightened airport security, at most it's a 'nuisance' when travelling, one most people can live with. The REAL issue here, and what we SHOULD be discussing in this thread is REAL loss of personal freedoms, such as the loss of the right to a fair trial under the recent US legislation enacted by Congress in the 'war against terrorism'.

well,I would like to know some numbers,because it's not that I am hearing that they are capturing terrorists in the rest of the world where they dont have these methods in place and that they are hijacking planes etc etc. So I just wanna know how improved these methods are compared to 'normal' methods other country's have.

If you can rate any other agency,police based on how many criminals are caught,why not this. I mean,if police didnt caught single guy whole year,would you say that they are doing a poor job or that they actually didnt had to capture anyone,because their presence is already enough and that 'crime rate' is falling,so they should continue good job at harassing everyone,stopping every guy on streat,doing full body searches,because you never know who might be a dealer,killer...
