I'm going to put together a guide that shows at which distance you should engage certain enemies because sometimes it is confusing. When two units both have automatic gun upgrades which one should attack from a distance (when both in same cover type)?

so for example, pios and engs, pios should always be close and engs should be farther away.

volks and rifles, volks should be at a distance, but once upgraded with mp40s should get as close as possible.

then it gets confusing... rangers with tommy guns should be the ultimate close quarters right? no they will get torn up from a lmg 42.

so i'm going to put together a template and will need people to fill in the blanks.

so expect a long list coming soon.

My available companies:
Allies:
*AB company going for raid assault
  Infantry going for tank reapers
Axis:
*Defensive going for rocket artillery
  Blitz going for lightning war
And an experimental Terror company going for subversion consisting of all volks and two King Tigers

Thats going to be harder than it sounds. Theres a few basic like you mentioned, volks at long range > rifles etc but there are so many factors that will effect it.
Such as:

Cover, in some instances green cover is better than building cover.
Movement, some units get big accuracy penalties while moving that depending on how far they have to run and what they are running at they may be better NOT to close the distance even if they are short range units.

Good Luck though, will be interesting to see what you come up with.

*Btw I have never heard the pios at long range thing. I always though a pio engie fight would be decided by who shot first, who had the best cover and random luck.

Yeah eng's are better at a distance, I've seen engs and pios go at it in the same cover and the engs get raped, i noticed if I kept my engs further away they faired much better.

im also not considering cover, but it's a good point when fighting against flame.

and paras suffer very little accuracy penalties when on the move, but ill try my best.

*changed*

Well this is what I have so far, I'm sure there are plenty of mistakes in it, so put your thoughts and opinions into it, I know it doesn't look very pretty (I wish I had spread sheet or something to make it).

OK, the guide is done, but I definitely don't think it's 100% correct, in fact, I think it's probably only 75% correct, so tell me what you guys think needs to be tweaked.

Find the unit you want to know about on the left and the distance that you should be fighting another unit on top. For example I want to know the best distance kept from a volks squad if I'm using regular riflemen. So I find riflemen on the left, line it up with volks from the top and it says I should be S. Which is short. The colors also show you which side it benefits, all the green is for US units, and all the gray is for axis units.

Long means you should keep as much distance as you can.
Medium means you are a bit closer.
Short means you should be about a pumas length from each other.
Close in means get as close as possible, move in right on top of them.

Maybe that's why BARs cost more than LMGs.

Experience, though it doesn't really matter because I did some guesstimates on a lot of them. Which is why I'm asking for people's help on making sure it's accurate.

All the advice I have is:

-Don't spam units.
-If you do spam units, use them and don't let them just sit there.
-Micro is ok. Don't get so in depth into micro so as to miss out on the bulk of your forces.
-STOP SENDING INFANTRY ARMED WITH RIFLES HEAD FIRST INTO BUILDINGS HOUSING MACHINE GUNS!
-STOP SENDING INFANTRY ARMED WITH RIFLES HEAD FIRST INTO TIGERS!
-STOP SENDING INFANTRY ARMED WITH RIFLES HEAD FIRST INTO INFANTRY ARMED WITH LMG'S!
-STOP SENDING INFANTRY ARMED WITH RIFLES HEAD FIRST INTO OTHER INFANTRY OF EQUAL FORCE WITHOUT ADEQUATE SUPPORT!

Why? 2 Volks > .30 cal in building.

one squad gets suppressed and dies then the other one follows

they both get suppressed and die

one miraculously gets around the building, only to be destroyed by anything else in the vicinity

generally, not a good tactic
