I just don't get it, we have video's showing people what to do, and guides, and threads, but why is it so hard for new players to download the map packs, or get set up on vent? I suggest creating some kind of pop up after EiR has been installed that links them directly to the guides, and the map database thread, and says something along the lines of "If you expect to play a game, get on vent, so people can help you get started, and download the map packs." I don't know something, it's probably just because people are lazy, but I don't know, when I first started I downloaded the map packs and got set up on vent before I even played a single game.

Anyone else have ideas to quickly help people get started in this game?

Refuse to play with them until they get on vent and get a map pack...thats what I usually do.

This is quite different from the way Coh works, where everything is auto downloaded and setup for your automatically by relic. That doesn't happen here, so have patience and help a noob instead of refusing to play/help them.

Dont tanke me wrong, I will help them get everything going, I would just refuse to play with them if they refuse to get on vent and dl the latest maps.

I have been tempted to break the tutorials up into small sectioned topics, rather then 1 long 40 minute tutorial.

that might help some of it?

I personally always try to be as helpful as possible with new people, but not 100% of the time, like said, if they refuse to get on vent, then that's their problem, I'm not going to type everything out when I could just tell them, as long as they are cooperative I will be too.

Anyways, I think you are right salan, maybe breaking it up into smaller sections would help. But I really think if phil or whoever does the launcher put something in the install that directed them to the proper threads, that would help a lot as well. Also I think my beginners guide should be put in the important information, or there should just be one long thread made for beginners. In important information, because the way the threads are set up on there, to be honest is a little confusing.

For the same reason why my parents can't figure out how to use a mobile phone menu, the same reason why some of my friends can't figure out what's the deal with folders, sub-folders and filepaths, the same reason why I can't figure out C++ and registry editing.

That aside, it'd be good if we can have 1 forum thread with subheaders we can direct newbies to as a manual.

E.g.
[1] Installation
[2] Map-packs
[3] Ventrilo
[4] Company Set-up
[5] Unit and Doctrine Manual

etc etc, then each of those links to more in-depth sections with video links. Cause right now the threads are scattered all over and are outdated in some cases.

I agree, I'm glad someone has updated the europe in ruins manual... which isn't really a manual at all, I think it should be renamed, but they have kept the doctrine descriptions up to date.

I think putting a link on the home page with something like "Noobs, click here for tutorials on (What you listed above)" In big red writing and stickied would be a big help.

There is an 'ULTIMATE GUIDE' but it actually isn't ultimate, and you have to hunt elsewhere for other information e.g. getting the maps.

Just gotta make it more updated and revamped.

***** When I first found the site, I followed the tutorial, and the links for the map packs were broken. I went on vent and Salan thankfully sent me the links. So it could be that some of the obvious tutorials in the forums are broken...

Thanks for pointing that out, Brother G.  That would be Unkn0wn's fault for remaking the map database thread so he would be the thread creator.  I PMed him asking him to fix.

I would recommend making up the mod install more professional.
With an up to date installer finding the CoH directory only to confirm for the user, and INCLUDING the final map pack, with notifications on the launcher if a new version of this map is out, and a WRITTEN tutorial explaining the very basics with links to all other tutorials and, if possible, HIGHRES-versions of the videos (thx to salan for loading them up).
If possible, include ventrilo in the install, if not, give a link to it directly in the installer.
What would be great as a longtime goals is a tutorial mission with severalplatoons of different sizes to call in in different situations (premade for the mission) to let people learn the advantage of small and medium-sized platoons, and tactical possibilities against common blob and spam tactics.
So the noobs don't get overrun by a horde of rangers and scream OP!

Don't know anything to improve on the community, some seem arrogant or unfriendly at times, but overall it's a helpful community.

***** Actually, for the most part, I think the installer and links for the maps is fine. There really are only three downloads, and one of them is not required (beta maps). And you just run them. Can't get much simpler than that.

The only thing I would add is an area in Vent for new players and perhaps even a recommendation as to the naming convention for people looking for learning games. Something akin to: "if you wish to find practice games for EiR, enter the Tutorial channel on the vent server. Also, make sure you sign in with [new] before your name..."

This lets everyone know that someone needs help getting started and gives them a private area to discuss the game without clogging up the general channel.

Once I got the maps worked out, I was up and running in no time. Granted, my builds were the suck, but after a game or two, had that figured out quickly.

i completely agree with most of your points, all except the ones about ventrilo. it is an assist not a necity,i personal have no mike and i still am able to do my part (via in game chat and comments mostly)

but ya i agree they should get ventrilo but they shouldn't be forced to. a link would be nice on the EIR main page cus it took me 3 days to track the site down lol, then i had to set it up Cheesy

it would be nice also if new players had some sort of training mission available to them, i cant count the times my noob allys had hue platoons (or no platoons at all lol)
i remember one game where i had a noob on my team and he thought he could only get tanks cus the platoon box was red when he went build his platoon lol.

any way its not that bad now give it a phew weeks and will have some decant players.

(and no im not a noob been hear since last war. not my fualt my win loss is so so low) its all brad andersons  fualt lol
