There was this news report on how a family has a personal oil drill in their backyard and is making quite a bit of money on it. The funny part in the report is the fact that they make pointless references to a TV show and movie which is completely unnecessary, making it seem like the only way people would ever be able to relate to this news story is through relating to a fictional characters.

I fail to see any humour in it at all. Obviously you don't watch enough Human interest stories, as they reference fictional people all the time. It's called connecting to the viewer.

That filthy little weasel wants to connect to the viewer? She should get pissed like everyone else, not giggle like some ditzy slut during a piece which references the price of oil.

Her voice pissed me off. I want to punch her in the throat.

Are there not other ways to relate to the viewer other then tv shows and movies? characters from books for example. other current events? some other way to relate other then tv and movie? im just surprised they didn't use a celebrity to relate "in about 5 years the family would make as much money as  britteny spears made in the first month of the release of her new album"

Check to see what companies made the movie/tv show and see if it is not somehow incorporated into Disney. Disney owns ABC, ESPN, clothing lines, publishers, and a shit load of other stuff so maybe those were tied into the Disney corporation and it was simply a way to advertise.

I don't think disney is tied to either the movie or that show, the show was cbs (thank wiki) and the movie im assuming was way too violent for something disney.

The thing is, connection to the veiwer is most often made by betting square on the money what the lowest common denominator is. Since you are apperantly feckless enough to be watching human interest and not something ANYTHING else, they reason you must watch alot of things.
Therefor, they reffernce to things that are watched and most times hit square on the head with a connection. If the world was propelled by reading or C-Span they would reffernce Harry Potter or Nigerian Slave Traders.

(Final note in concern to the last thread, aren't bland generalizations about a culture fostered by mass media great? Im going on a trip to Europe so I cracked out my Monty Python series and am avidly learning about proper cultural norms.)
