http://www.gametrailers.com/player/48342.htmlSo I never played any of the games in this series, but I know a few of you have. What's this game all about? It looks like the most complex WWII game I've seen.

Best WW2 strategy game imo.
Imagine 'Axis & Allies' but even more complex, steep learning curve but once you get there it's brilliant. Also has excellent multiplayer possibilities. (Recreating world war 2 your way)

I love the hell out of Hearts of Iron II and am eagerly anticipating III.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

It IS overwhelming at first, but given time it is much, much easier than at first glance.

It's not difficult to learn to play, but you have to like it. The point of this game is that it has so many variables that it's impossible to know how does thing exactly work, but you just need some common sense, and a little practice (I'm talking about land battles). In fact when you learn to play, it's so easy to beat the AI that it becomes boring. But playing a multiplayer HOI II game, is surely the best game i've ever played. If you want to start to play just play the tutorials once (don't matter if you don't understad everything there) and start a game with Germany 1936,1938, or 1939 (it would be better the first 2 dates) following the historical timeline of events.
I've been reading all the developement diarys of HOI3 and it seems its going to by far superior than HOI II, it seems they're going to improve it a lot with much more things to control/decide (but much more help from the AI to manage the country).

Yeah. I tried HOI2, but it was definitely confusing at first.
I have played a lot of EU3, but HOI2 seems so much more complex, particularly in the research and military area.
Does anyone know a good starting guide or well documented AAR to follow, just to get my feet wet?

HOI2 is an awesome game, I wasted a ton of hours on it. Definitely not easy to learn, but lots of fun. Not going to claim I was any good, to be honest I was poor, but I still enjoyed it. For atlanton... http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378841

Get Naval Bombers, keep the battle screen open and are rdy to hit pause instantly . Naval Bombers are awesome. Got a 10+ day round going with a friend trying to concquer the world, not a lot left now. It is a realy awesome game in my opinion.
