88s
« on: December 01, 2011, 11:52:07 am »

The 88 is a really cool unit and I think it adds a lot to the game but there are a few things that seem slightly too powerful about them in my opinion.

Too accurate against ATGs at long range.
Splash or damage on indirect fire possibly slightly too high.
or cooldown of indirect fire slightly too low.
Accuracy against infantry slightly too high.

The 88 is a beast AT weapon and with the barrage it's a useful anti blob/ support weapon.
The problem I see with it is that it is also a very effective atg sniper and is also quite capable of beating up any infantry going at it.

My ideas on remedies:
Worse accuracy modifier against atgs. Atg vs. Atg is 0.1 so perhaps something slightly higher than this but not hugely.
Either reduced damage per shell on indirect fire or slightly lower splash, or 20s cooldown increase.
Slightly worse accuracy modifier against inf or at least moving infantry.

88s are an incredibly fearsome unit on the field and that adds an interesting level and requires good strategies to take them out and I like that but I think they are just a touch too powerful in certain roles.

Another thing that always bugged me about 88s. Are the crewmen really a lot harder to damage then the 105 howitzer crewmen or is that just my mind playing tricks on me?

Regarding the question at the end:

The 88 offers heavy or garrison cover for the crews while the 105 Howitzer offers no protection at all.

88 is effective vs atg when it has sight on it,atg needs only 3 shoots to kill 88,so if you smoke and move in,you can take out 88 quite well.

im quite happy that this thread appears now cos i wanted to open a similar one handling 88s some days ago

imho there should be made several changes to 88s

- their accuracy vs infantry should be lowered and brought in line with last vcoh patch changes
- their accuracy vs AT guns should be lowered
- their setup time should be lowered
- the accuracy of AT guns vs the flaks should be lowered

all these changes should be done to make the flaks less hit or miss/fail or rape but giving them a more predictable performance on the battlefield

The smoke is quite useful but the rof plus accuracy of 88 can have a atg gun dead before it is able to get out of sight or behind a blocker. 88s obliterating atg like that at shorter ranges is alright but at max range it just seems a tad too accurate.

one big issue i really have with 88's is how accurate they are vs all support weapons. Last game i had vs an 88 i had a mortar at max range to the 88 and one shot, boom whole thing, crew, gun gone. same thing happens to hmgs.

It's also 100% accurate vs all atgs if u didnt' know.

also with the arty t3 it can be fearsom, especially if u have an officer supervising.

it never occurred to you to support your "support" weapons? The 88 is fine.

1 capt with FOO + smoke = no more 88

The weaknesses of the flak 88 are why this unit is fine the way it is. Use more indirect and you will be fine.

Only thing that ever gets me about the 88 is that you can make it dual role by giving it artillery.

It's standard combat performance is great and counterable in most circumstances with your head screwed on.

seriously smoke and bring up atgs, kills my 88s every time.

best tactic vs 88? AVOID IT! that's 8, or probably more pop cap if they leave stuff to defend it, that is sitting there doing nothing!

if those changes happened it would need a price decrease and a pop decrease, because if it cant take out atgs, they would be so easy to kill.

use smoke and flames
arty and rush so you can take it over
mass infantry
sneak around and hit it with m10s/m18s
if you know a player has one, dont let them set it up, keep scouting and harassing units around

The 88 is fine I don't know what your complaining about, it's not like it can move or anything. You have these options to fight it:
A. Do not fight in that sector
B. Flank it with mass vehicles and/or infantry
C. Try using smoke with above combo or flamers
D. Use arty, eventually you will kill it or decrew it then follow up with an attack and have a new 88 to play with.
E. At guns can rape it especially with AP rounds, so can boys AT guns and zooks.

Personally I would like to see the damage done by atg and tanks go down on it because it just seems pretty retarded how one AP round atg can kill the thing in about 2-3 shots.

The main risk of facing 88's is the pyschological effect.

Time and time again I've seen players who are normally quite decent literally fall to pieces when the enemy puts an 88 on the field.

Next time you see an 88 do the following:

Take a deep breath.
Gather up your full pop worth of units.
Attack somewhere else.
Even if the enemy moves to where you are attacking, they HAVE to leave a few of their units behind to guard the flak.
Now you have your full pop (and your allies') facing off against less than your opponent's full pop.

Whipe them out, then move in on the flak while they are reinforcing on the field.

Works almost every time unless you are drunk or high or playing with Tank.

I think 88s are just fine. The only problem is them on super open maps with no proper flank zones.

Which is the map makers fault not the gun.

Wind, quit the personal crap. It's over.

I know it looks that way, but it's actually just an anecdote from a game a few days ago. It was a prime example of a player who isn't normally terrible falling to pieces at the sight of an 88.

There is just something about 88s that can drive people to panic. The best way to fight them, though, is to just keep calm and work with your team. Interestingly enough, most 88's can be used as a hindrance for your enemy rather than something to be feared.
