The Complete Military History of France
- Gallic Wars
- Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian. [Or at ths time in history, a Roman -ed.]
- Hundred Years War
- Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "Frances armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.
- Italian Wars
- Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians.
- Wars of Religion
- France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots
- Thirty Years War
- France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.
- War of Revolution
- Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.
- The Dutch War
- Tied
- War of the Augsburg League/King Williams War/French and Indian War
- Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.
- War of the Spanish Succession
- Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved every since.
- American Revolution
- In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."
- French Revolution
- Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
- The Napoleonic Wars
- Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.
- The Franco-Prussian War
- Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to Frances ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.
- World War I
- Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States [Entering the war late -ed.]. Thousands of French women find out what its like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.
- World War II
- Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.
- War in Indochina
- Lost. French forces plead sickness; take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu
- Algerian Rebellion
- Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.
- War on Terrorism
- France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonalds.

Romans weren't italians and were pretty much one of the most awesome early civilisations of our planet.
They were superior on all levels and eventually they collapsed internally and were overrun by hordes and hordes of uncivilised barbarians.
So number 1 really doesn't count as "italians"
.
But pretty funny and unfortunately pretty true.
Good find.

One thing THTB wars of revolution, main protagonists are austrains prussians and english all soundly trounced so definate french victory.
Napoleonic wars sound french victory till 1812 so thats not much different to unified germany in ww2
Napoleon lost to germans and russians not brits alone, re 1813 war of liberation 1814 invasion of france, 1815 was a german/ english coalition victory, without blucher no victory at waterloo, but thats my napoleonic side showing.....
Of all people i would expect you to know the differnce between a trumped up british victory and a true german victory!!! the only thing wellington can claim is kicking a bunch of marshalls out of spain and lying to his german compatriots and try to hog the acclaim for himself
(he was a great statesman though)
Nice find mate

Umm.... The United states played a tiny part in World War 1, only coming into the war in the last year, when victory was already certain by the Allies.
The French and British were allies, and if your ally wins, your side wins. Thats just how it is; the French were a good fighting force (and still are) it's only because you've been reading history books made by American authors.

WRONG. France was betrayed by the Vichy regime who was sympathetic to the Nazi government (even going as far to hunt down French Jews), many of the French people hated the fact that their government simply gave up to the Germans. That is way hundreds of fighting men left France to join up with the Free French Forces and the French Resistance.
The reason you don't hear about the Free French as much is because the American generals didn't see the French as a fighting force, it was only Churchill who saw the value of having the French continually fighting beside her Allies. The French army (after ousting the Germans from France) played a fairly significant role in conquering Germany.
Learn some
real non-biased
history.

Ya know, sometimes I wonder to myself:
Do people realize this is a joke? And then this voice in the back of my head is messing with and tells me that it's not a joke ...
But I really enjoyed "Dien Bien Flu" haha

Yeah, that thread is BS. But some things need clarification.
World War One: Victory, already certain...
Not really. Sure, the Allies wouldn't have "lost", but an armistice heavily favoring the Germans would probably have been made. After all, all the Germans had to do was keep their conquered territory to win. Though the morale boost/loss from America's entry into the war was substantial, Wilson's Fourteen Points might have been better.
World War Two: Betrayed by the Vichy Government?
Yeah, right. Sure, they were happy enough to hunt down Jews, but that also happened on, you know, the other side (there's something called retribution that does stuff, bad stuff). French People hated the Nazis, sure, but, in the early years, the majority did see Petain as a hero. Until the Allies started winning. Vichy Government was also a part of France, I'd like to add.
Blame the Germans.
Free French Forces were pretty good. And about as substantial as American troop help in WWII.
Most people can't recognize this as a joke. It's pretty amazing.
On the topic...
I'd love to see the French Resistance in COH. Imagine cheap, expendable snipers that can only cloak in cover, Cyclone Mines, and guerrilla demo charges. And with CP abilities that call the French up in arms...think expendable partisans.

The Free French Forces could be a viable army. But then again, there simply aren't enough Axis armies for a 1:1 ratio if we used all the major Allied armies.

I want the US Marines (6 man flamethrower teams), Russians (20 man squad), Chindits (enough said), and the FFF (ditto).
For the Axis, Japanese (squads without suppression, and ninja swords).
For Both, Italian
.
We could also flame the German willful stupidity and Bush (once again, enough said). But there is no point. Besides propaganda.
That would be awesome as advertisement...Imagine Lai creating posters of why you should fight against a certain side, then posting the posters all across the vCOH boards...
Propaganda against the nation...but propaganda for EIR.

Yeah. They fought the Japanese in the Pacific. Though I believe some Marines may have been on the Western Front...or was that World War One?
Note I wrote COH, not EIR, Thtb. Though CBI in Ruins has some appeal to it, too.

True.
SPARE MY LIFE! It continous
Mexico, 1863-1864.
France attempts to take advantage of Mexico's weakness following its thorough thrashing by the U.S. 20 years earlier ("Halls of Montezuma"). Not surprisingly, the only unit to distinguish itself is the French Foreign Legion (consisting of, by definition, non-Frenchmen). Booted out of the country a little over a year after arrival.
Panama jungles 1881-1890.
No one but nature to fight, France still loses; canal is eventually built by the U.S. 1904-1914.
Napoleonic Wars.
Should be noted that the Grand Armee was largely (~%50) composed of non-Frenchmen after 1804 or so. Mainly disgruntled minorities and anti-monarchists. Not surprisingly, these performed better than the French on many occasions.
Haiti, 1791-1804.
French defeated by rebellion after sacrificing 4,000 Poles to yellow fever. Shows another rule of French warfare; when in doubt, send an ally.
India, 1673-1813.
British were far more charming than French, ended up victors. Therefore the British are well known for their tea, and the French for their whine (er, wine...). Ensures 200 years of bad teeth in England.
Barbary Wars, middle ages-1830.
Pirates in North Africa continually harass European shipping in Meditteranean. France's solution: pay them to leave us alone. America's solution: kick their asses ("the Shores of Tripoli"). [America's] first overseas victories, won 1801-1815.
1798-1801, Quasi-War with U.S.
French privateers (semi-legal pirates) attack U.S. shipping. U.S. fights France at sea for 3 years; French eventually cave; sets precedent for next 200 years of Franco-American relations.
Moors in Spain, late 700s-early 800s.
Even with Charlemagne leading them against an enemy living in a hostile land, French are unable to make much progress. Hide behind Pyrennes until the modern day.
French-on-French losses (probably should be counted as victories too, just to be fair):
1208: Albigenses Crusade, French massacared by French.
When asked how to differentiate a heretic from the faithful, response was "Kill them all. God will know His own." Lesson: French are badasses when fighting unarmed men, women and children.
St. Bartholomew Day Massacre, August 24, 1572.
Once again, French-on-French slaughter.
Third Crusade.
Philip Augustus of France throws hissy-fit, leaves Crusade for Richard the Lion Heart to finish.
Seventh Crusade.
St. Louis of France leads Crusade to Egypt. Resoundingly crushed.
[Eighth] Crusade.
St. Louis back in action, this time in Tunis. See Seventh Crusade.
Also should be noted that France attempted to hide behind the Maginot line, sticking their head in the sand and pretending that the Germans would enter France that way. By doing so, the Germans would have been breaking with their traditional route of invading France, entering through Belgium (Napoleonic Wars, Franco-Prussian War, World War I, etc.). French ignored this though, and put all their effort into these defenses.

Although i usually dont like to generalize, I think the warrior spirit is less common in the french culture than in others.
In my oppinion this is mainly because of their part in the history of the Roman Empire, where they got invaded and integrated early and quickly.
After that they lived through 500 years of relative peace, became civilized, and and less and less skilled in the art of war. This was an important part of the forming of french culture.
Wheras, if you compare it to the germans, who reppelled the roman invasion, still stayed quite barbaric as farmers and warriors, and were constanly fighting either the romans or each other. Geographical reasons, like 3/4 of a nation being surrounded by water, or by enemies, play a part too.
The french are good in a many lot of things, but warfare isnt one of them. And their part in WW2 is much too small to be worthy of CoH.

Well, Australia (the country, not the colony) has only been around for just over 100 years. Yet, we've developed a strong 'warrior' spirit, so good that Rommel respect Australian soldiers more than their British counter parts.

The Penal colony was only 1 part of the mission to Australia, the soon to be Governor of Australia has already written up laws and other things need to create a country.
It was always planned to have Australia as Britain's largest colony, the prisoner thing was because they didn't have space. It wasn't a prison colony that turned into a country, more a country that had to bear the burden of Britain's lack of space.
