how does an airborne (Smokaz) grenade thrown at the front of a king tiger cause it to have engine damage?
the airborne then retreated immediately after it was thrown...

Grenades can kill KT's if the KT is low enough. I've taken a nade from a vetless rifle and used it to blow up a KT before. Just need to get the crit. It happens often enough at really low health.

The 5% bug goes both ways - sure you can get crit after crit after crit without killing a thing, but it also makes little explosions also do crits. IIRC

Bulshit like draken situation when motor killed pershing, or when I thrown nade on 5% tiger- main cannon destroyed. It's part of 5% mechanism

Every single axis tank has died to my airborne grenades, back when I used to play airborne.
You're lucky you only got engine damage Wink.

This is how the 5% mechanics work. A nade can kill a KT if it gets lucky. I dunno how you want to rationalize it. The nade going into the turret maybe? haha.

To answer your question, vehicles take damage from grenades, and while they do very small damage, any explosive damage CAN score a critical hit on a vehicle. The way coh works, the lower the targets health is the higher the chance of it getting critically hit. If the kt was in the 70%> range, even if it was at 100%, there is a very small chance that a shot will cause a critical hit. The critical table gets worse as the health goes down, for example: out of control and make causality results will only happen if the target is low on health, but engine damaged result can occur at any time. If the shot hits side/rear/bottom/top it has an additional chance of critically damaging the vehicle. A grenade, unlike a sticky, it considered to be on the ground, so the damage is coming from the BOTTOM of the vehicle not from the direction it was thrown.

I have killed a tiger, a panzer 4 and a stuh with grenades in some of the games I had.

Duck I am not positive, but I don't think bottom and top play into CoH for any kind of multiplier.

I think Duck's experience is correct. Sometimes when a tank is at higher elevation, it's shell will hit the top of an enemy tank, and this is counted as a rear hit because it's not the front arc. So for grenades and satchels with their AoE attack they bypass the front armour.

Bottom/top/side all count as rear armor in coh.
