Why I didnt like:

1: thought the vanilla 88 was "fine" before - doctrine buffs made 88 was too good vs inf/support weapons, but the balance between 88s and atgs was okay

2: the current change still allows 88 to 2 shot atgs reliably (they still hit them more than not), while a 57mm shot does like 50 dmg to one.. AP rounds are irrelevant vs 88s now cause you dont have any base damage to begin with

a separate issue: the artillery on the 88 makes this unit way too good for pop, imagine a infantry doctrine ability that allowed the howitzer to make 100 range strikes with a 7-8 second reload while waiting for the main barrage to reload?

i think the population cost is a huge issue with the doctrine buff, and i think it needs to be made weaker vs atgs or atgs stronger vs 88 with the vanilla one.

Yet again, I suggest a period of inactivity after the 88 uses the artillery barrage where it can't attack at all for a set period of time, giving the Allies a window, albeit a small one, to attack.

as i watched a replay in which smokaz had two atguns firing at one 88 for like 2 minutes and were hitting it in 1 after 8 misses or so, i was like is this really the possiblity? i mean, srsly!

Yea the 88 arty which has no smoke and is quite accurate is a huge problem, shouldve been removed a long time ago, if defensive needs arty, give it a LEFH18

I've been telling people that 88 Arty is entirely inappropriate and makes the 88 too damned good for a long time.

So many people wanting all their units to be able to fill every need. Sigh.

I gave up trying to fight that battle.

I had no issue with its accuracy vs everything or its damage as it was stationary. But giving it indirect just made it near omnipotent.

We could

A) Remove 88 arty and be done with it
B) Revert the ATGs' accuracy and damage vs the 88, but leave the 88 untouched--as an immobile peice it should be supported, anyone that can get an ATG into range should be rewarded.
C) Increase the pop
D) Disallow the Officer from buffing the 88.

Take your pick.

Can i pick A and D?

vanilla 88 already has crazy accuracy and long range with great damage. Why have the ability to buff up its strength even more just b/c of an officer? If it missed here and there, especially LVs, and maybe bounced off certain armor frontal tanks. okay fine. But its one shoting snipers, jeeps, and you know you dont want any tanks near that thing. I thnk officers are giving it an unnecessary overdramatic buff.

but in all honesty and if i had to pick one. Ya lose the arty. no smoke, pretty tight shot group. rechargeable, and throw in its 88 capabilities it does lead to a WTF this thing does everything moments.

There is this oh 88s are easy to take down argument. I took down my fair share of 88s. Easiest one i just use 1 zook ranger squad with grenades. But most examples of how easy it is to take down an 88, deals with ideal situations. Poor coordinated axis team doesnt guard it and doest work well together vs allied organized infantry blob. But when you are dealing with 1 or 2 88s that can cover the map, well defended, and 88s support axis offensive assaults with long ranger cannon PLUS that arty which may reach allied howi or medical area. I dont even know why a unit with 88 capabilities will be given such an obscure and useful ability in addition.

orrrr as said before once it uses arty its render inactive and cant shoot even its main gun for a brief period.

That is a paltry insignificance considering it shreds other tanks, and with the artillery it can devastate infantry as well.

Hmm. well the main problem imo is that the 88 can still hit everything effectively and its just a allround all purpose machine. Maybe if 88 didn't have so great range it would be easier. or if it didnt have arty but then again if it didn't have arty it would just be barraged to death without any sort of real ability to defend itself.

And since the 88 can already build sandbags to protect itself it makes it even harder to kill even more so with a medic bunker.  the fact that you can abuse these items yes sure that first one is a bit tricky to place first but after that all the rest fall in line.

For 220 fuel? you can get 6 which means you can easily cover the map in all purpose 88s and with officer buffs as well. now of course a arty piece can do the same but a arty piece can not protect itself from direct fire.
