I'm looking forward to true sight. It always sucked in CoH to spot the enemy on the other side of a wall or see him in a vulnerable position. Then move up an AT piece to blast an opening, just to have him turn the HMG or whatever. With true sight sure you still have 360 sight but at least proper scouting can really cut a swathe through your enemies.

One thing I'm intensely interested in is how we can mod the true sight system. I don't know if anyone played Sudden Strike but they had a sight system where units saw further in their facing direction. They also had a General unit which had the ability to greatly enhance his sight range at the sacrifice of peripheral vision. Like looking through binoculars. I'm tried to do similar stuff in CoH but it always turned out ugly. So I'm interested to see what we can do with it.

Definitely agree. The multiplayer was great fun. A strange system with the capture balloons, but it played out nicely. That was a game where you truly could shred someone's army with proper understand of mechanics

I'm very skeptical that true sight will work well in COH. Every game I've played with an "innovative" LOS system has had 0 competitive success, and very little multiplayer interest.

Why? Because most people can deal with losing a game, but less can handle losing without even being able to see their enemy/understand what's happening. It doesn't make for a fun game mechanic.

People only lose to an enemy they can't see in such games because they're too reliant on traditional LOS systems.

it's not horrible because if you see in the video, you can still see terrain features and buildings through the FOW, but you just can't see the enemy, i think it'll work out great.

I'm wondering if we'll be able to mod(or have in the base game) camouflaged units in buildings with the Essence engine 3.0 and the true sight system. Not knowing an enemy has occupied a building until you get close or it's too late was always superb devastating in other games that used it

Similar to how mgs, and atgs in Blitz mod can fire bursts and a shot or 2 before becoming decloaked ?

Right, but every new player is going to go through that experience, and I am skeptical at how many are willing to stick around and understand more.

To put this a different way: The learning curve of a game is magnified exponentially when you can't even see what's going on. It's much more difficult to learn from your mistakes when it is impossible for you to see what you are doing wrong.

Although, I suppose I'll be happy if units that are shooting at you from the fog of war are revealed, as they are now.

If every game developer would listen to that and dumb down every game they make, it would get worse and worse and not better. I really doubt that it will take too much work to get used to that new system.

Erm, it's not a matter of simple versus complex, it's a matter of information availability.

Somebody remind me again how many people play multiplayer Men of War, Ruse, and Wargame: EE?

I kinda like the look of the True Sight system.

But then again, I've never liked traditional LOS in RTS's.

I mean I know Obama was the first one in EiR to get a card. and tbfh the Race card is pretty OP. but Romney has the K.K.K., those guys seem to camo anywhere. So OP units from both sides.
At the end of the day, however, stormtroopers finally got the anal invasion with a cactus they have richly deserved for years.

Those games sure are more complicated than Company of Heroes.

And to be honest? Vanilla Wargame > Vanilla CoH for me, for some of the same reasons I find EiR more fun.

Right, but I don't think it's entirely the complexity which puts people off, I think people get frustrated trying to learn with the LOS system.

Ohhh no, people get frustrated because of

"OH GOD, WHY DID MY SUPERTANKS DIE TO LOWLY INFANTRY!?"

I'm excited for the true sight system personally, but it could be a wrong step for THQ, as I feel most people won't like it.

pretty much, people think that if something kills them that they cant' see it's cheating or unfair.

fact is, i think the true sight will allow guerrilla tactics, ambushing and other things that you couldnt' do before so you wont have so much spam since you could possibly  surprise a blob with something and take 'em all out
